Determine Your Computer Configuration

Determining Your Memory and Processor:

Windows 98/2000/ME

  • Right click on My Computer
  • Select Properties
  • Select General

In System Properties below "Computer" you will see two items. The first will be the type of computer you have. The next will be the system memory.

Windows XP

Click on start menu in the lower left corner

Right click My Computer and select properties

Under System properties you will see the Processor type, CPU Speed, and installed RAM

Windows Vista

Click on Windows logo in the lower left corner

Mac OS X

Got to the Apple Menu and choose About This Mac

The About This Mac window should look similar to this:

  • Version: the exact version of the system software
  • Processor: the speed and type of processor
  • Memory: how much RAM is installed


Determine Hard Drive Size:

Windows

Open My Computer and right click Local Disk under Hard Disk Drives

You will then see the capacity of the Hard Drive as pictured

Mac OS X

To get information about the hard drive, click once on the icon to select it.

From the File menu, select Get Info.

The Macintosh HD Info window should look similar to the next image, You may need to click the triangle next to General to expand that section.

  • Capacity: the total size of the hard drive
  • Available: how much space is free on the drive
  • Used: how much space is currently used on the drive


Determine your Optical Drive Type

Windows

Right click My Computer and select properties

Mac OS X

OS X includes a utility called System Profiler that provides more advanced information about the system. In the About This Mac window, click the More Info button to open System Profiler.

Determine Your Screen Size

To determine the size of your screen, simply measure the viewable area from corner to corner diagonally using a ruler or tape measure.

Right click My Computer and select properties

Determining Your Graphics Card Type and RAM Size

If you want to see your graphics card type and size then right click on your desktop and select properties.
