This edition of the reCommerce report focuses on reCommerce (trade in) trends at Gazelle throughout the launch of the iPhone 5S and 5C. This year, more consumers locked in their offers before the invite to the announcement was even out, and the new iPhones didn’t just bring out Apple fans; it led to huge spikes in trades for a variety of Samsung Galaxy and HTC devices.
In this report, we’ll look at:
Twice as nice: Two new iPhones drive massive trade-ins
Apple sold more than 9 million iPhones in the first weekend – the highest first weekend sales reported by Apple ever. This year’s dual-iPhone launch is also the biggest iPhone event in the history of Gazelle.
From August 20 through September 30, Gazelle presented more than 4 million offers to customers looking to trade in and peaked at 600 offers made per second. During the same period (August 20 through September 30), Gazelle revenue was up nearly three times over the same period in 2012.

What to Watch
New iPad 5 & iPad Mini 2 – Apple is all set to update their iPad line-up on October 22. Believe it or not, it’s been three years since the last design change, so we’ll likely see a much-needed design update to the full size iPad. The new iPad may borrow styling queues from the current iPad Mini as the housing is expected to be sleek, light and slim. I would even expect the “champagne” color from the iPhone 5S, and maybe even Touch ID, to land on the upcoming tablet.
When it comes to the popular iPad Mini 2, I expect the device to retain its current form factor, but it could possibly gain a retina display. I also think we’ll see some internal enhancements and maybe even some new colors for the housing (not the iPhone 5C type, however).
