Sony Xperia Z2 Unveiled: 4K video, 5.2-inch display, Snapdragon 801

Sony just announced their all new flagship handset the Xperia Z2 earlier this morning at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Xperia Z2 is the follow up to the successful Xperia Z1 that launched only 6 months ago in August. Sony fans in the US just got their hands on the Z1 last month as it arrived on T-Mobile as the new Xperia Z1S.

Although the new Z2 looks very similar to the Z1, Sony has put most of the upgrades both in the display and under the hood. Die hard Xperia fans should love the fact that Sony has elected to finally use an IPS panel display over the TFT display found on previous Xperia Z devices (Z, ZL, Z1, Z1S). The new display finally allows for much better viewing angles and for brighter color reproduction.

Specs & Features:

  • 5.2-inch 1080p display
  • Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz quad-core 4G LTE processor
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 16GB of internal storage with microSD
  • 20.7 megapixel Exmor RS sensor with 4K video recording and image stabilization
  • 3,000mAh battery (3,200mAh for some models)
  • Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi, GPS, NFC, MHL
  • 4G LTE
  • Android 4.4 KitKat

Sony has increased the screen size by using a new 5.2-inch 1080p TRILUMINOS display, with Live Color LED powered by X-Reality for mobile. The device is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset (2.3GHz quad-core processor) and sports 3GB RAM.

For photography Sony is keeping the 20.7Mp shooter from the Z1, but throwing in the new effects found on the T-Mobile Z1S here in the US. The 20.7MP camera has been updated (software) with 4K video recording (at 30fps) plus a number of other new effects. The camera features the exact same 1/2.3″ sensor with 27mm G Lens with f/2.0 aperture.

Like all devices in the Z lineup, the Z2 will be both IP55/Ip58 certified, meaning it is both waterproof and dustproof. The Z2 will also sport a larger batter (3200 vs 3000) which should help power the new Qualcomm chip and bigger screen.

Pricing & Availability:

The Xperia Z2 from Sony is set to launch March at €600 in Europe and £600 in the UK. The initial color options will be the same as the Z1 with White, Black and Purple all available at launch. The gadget blog site mobile361, has broken down exact European launch prices by country here.

With the launch of the Z1S on T-Mobile just last month, it was no surprise that we did not see a launch date set for the US. I would expect to the Z2 arrive 6 months after the Z1S in the US, putting in T-Mobile stores around June/July of this year.
