Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet Hits the US Market

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet, Sony’s follow-up to the Tablet Z, is now available to order from the nation’s major phone providers and from Sony itself.

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is now available to order from the nation’s major phone providers and directly from Sony. Prices range from $499 to $599, depending on the amount of internal storage space, provider, and contract length. To better illustrate the wealth of features offered, Verizon has also put together a sharp promotional video.

The device is an elegant piece that blends style and power in a 10.1-inch Android tablet. The Xperia Z2 is applauded for being one of the thinnest and lightest among 10-inch form factor tablets, at a mere 6.35 mm wide and weighing just shy of one pound. The rounded curves add style to the more industrial chrome accents, and it is available in either black or white.

Under the Hood

The Sony Xperia Z2 runs Android KitKat 4.4.2 and enjoys some of the very best hardware to bolster its acclaimed performance, including the Snapdragon 801 processor that clocks in at 2.26 Ghz. It features 3GB of RAM and Andreno 330 GPU for graphics. The tablet also includes PlayStation DualShock 3 gamepad control support for a more natural and familiar gaming experience, 8 MP rear-facing camera, and Sony’s Triluminos display running 1900 by 1200 resolution. The Xperia also stands out for being one of the few dust-resistant and waterproof tablets—it can survive up to 30 minutes submerged in 4.9 feet of water.

Early reviews of the Xperia Z2 have been largely favorable. Engadget applauds the device for its “snappy performance,” saying, “Not only is the Tablet Z2 the thinnest and lightest tab Sony has ever made, but also it’s far and away the best.” Engadget did express concern over the device’s battery life, however, stating that while the tablet lasted seven to eight hours with moderate continuous use, its battery life does fall short of most competitors and even its Tablet Z predecessor.

What are your thoughts? Does the Xperia Z2 have what it takes to compete against Samsung, the 10-inch tablet king?
