Going through your contacts one day, you suddenly realize how many of them are little more than clutter. We’ve all been there; reaching the number you want means scrolling past ten you haven’t spoken to in years and another six you’re struggling even to remember.
You’re ready to clean up your contacts list. Once you’ve done the hard part of the job – picking which contacts get to stay and which have to go – it’s time to help with the process. A few things worth learning about before you start: as of iOS 16, Apple added a built-in tool for deleting and merging duplicate contacts, and iOS 17 introduced the ability to delete multiple contacts at once with an easy gesture. It’s also important to remember that according to Apple Support, deleting a contact permanently removes it from your device – and if it’s linked to an email account, it’s permanently deleted from all devices signed into that account as well. Follow this guide to learn how to trim everything from a single contact to your entire list.
How to Delete a Single Contact on Your iPhone
After a long internal debate, you’ve decided to finally let go of your ex’s number. Once you’ve made the choice, deleting a single contact on your iPhone is easy:
- Open your Contacts app.
- Find the contact you want to delete and tap to open it.
- Tap “Edit” at the top right of the screen.
- Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap “Delete Contact.”
- When the confirmation screen pops up, tap “Delete Contact” again.
When you follow the steps above, you’ll permanently delete the contact from your iPhone. If the contact is connected to your email account, deleting it on your iPhone will also permanently delete the contact from any other device you have signed into that account.
You can remove email contacts from your iPhone’s contact list while retaining them on your other devices — this process is equally easy:
- Open your iPhone Settings.
- Select “Apps,” then “Contacts,” then “Accounts.”
- Find the account with the contacts you want to remove and tap to open it.
- Move the toggle next to “Contacts” to the off position.
- When the confirmation screen pops up, tap “Delete from My iPhone.”
While this process leaves the contacts in your email account and on other logged-in devices, they will vanish from your iPhone. If you add them back to your iPhone later, you can do so by basically following the first three steps and moving the “Contacts” toggle back to the on position.
If you’re syncing contacts through Google, deleted contacts are moved to Google’s trash for 30 days before being permanently removed, giving you a window to recover them if you need it. How to Delete Multiple Contacts on Your iPhone
If you’re running iOS 17 or later, you can now delete multiple contacts directly on your iPhone. There are also a few other methods available depending on your setup.
Delete Multiple Contacts Directly on Your iPhone (iOS 17 or Later)
Starting with iOS 17, Apple added the ability to choose and delete multiple contacts at once right from your iPhone:
- Open the Contacts app on your iPhone.
- Tap “Select” in the top right corner of the screen.
- Tap each contact you want to delete to select them – a checkmark will appear next to each selected name.
- Tap “Delete” at the bottom of the screen.
- Confirm by tapping “Delete Contacts” when the confirmation prompt appears.
According to Apple Support, when you delete a contact, it’s permanently removed from your device. If the contact was connected with an email account like iCloud or Gmail, it will also be permanently deleted from all devices signed into that account.
Delete Contacts With Your Mac
If you’ve signed in to iCloud, your contacts are synced across all your Apple devices. If you have a Mac, you can use it to delete multiple contacts at once:
- Open your Contacts app.
- Select multiple contacts to remove by clicking each one while holding the “Command” (CMD) key on your keyboard.
- Press the “Delete” key on your keyboard.
Delete Duplicate Contacts
If you’re running iOS 16 or later, Apple now includes a built-in tool to find and merge duplicate contacts directly on your iPhone. You can also manage duplicates on your Mac:
- Before you begin, make a backup by copying your contacts.
- Open your Contacts app.
- Click on the “Card” menu at the top and select “Look for Duplicates.”
- When the popup box appears, click “Merge.”
- Repeat steps 2-4 until you’ve merged all duplicate cards.
Once you’ve merged all duplicate contacts, you can go through and remove any outdated information.
Delete Contacts With iCloud
If you need to manage contacts from a browser – on a PC or a borrowed computer – you can delete multiple iCloud contacts at once through iCloud.com. Remember that you’ll need your iPhone nearby to complete the login, as Apple will send a 6-digit verification code to your trusted device. It’s also a good idea to back up your iPhone before making bulk changes:
- Open your internet browser and go to iCloud.com. Log in with your Apple ID and password, then enter the 6-digit verification code sent to your iPhone.
- When the main page loads, click on “Contacts.”
- Select the contacts you want to delete by clicking each one while holding the “Control” (Ctrl) or “Command” (CMD) key on the keyboard.
- Click the “Settings” gear in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Click “Delete” in the popup menu.
- When the confirmation box pops up, click “Delete” again.
When you finish, iCloud will delete your selections across your logged-in devices.
Delete Contacts With Groups
Groups is a third-party iPhone app that lets you create contact groups within your bigger contact list. While some features are only accessible via in-app purchases, you can still delete contacts with the free version. Once you’ve downloaded the app and allowed it to access your Contacts, you can use it to modify your contact list at any time:
- Open Groups on your iPhone.
- Tap “All Contacts” at the top of the Groups list.
- Tap the circles to the left of the names to select the contacts you want to delete – a checkmark will appear when a name is selected.
- Tap “Choose Action” at the top of the screen.
- Tap “Delete contacts” in the menu that appears.
- When the confirmation box pops up, tap “Remove from my iPhone!”
Once you’ve finished, you can open your iPhone’s Contacts app to double-check that your selections are gone. If you accidentally removed something important, learn how to recover deleted content on your iPhone.
How to Delete All Contacts on Your iPhone
In some circumstances, a fresh start and a clean slate are all that will do. If you’re doing an online refresh, going off the grid or running away to join the circus and want to learn how to delete your iPhone contacts, this section is here to help. Try the methods below instead of erasing them one at a time or in batches.
iCloud
While you can only delete selected iPhone contacts on a computer, you can erase your entire contact list on either a computer or your iPhone. Remember that as of Apple’s updated policy (February 2026), if you delete a contact that’s linked to an email account, it’s permanently removed from all devices signed into that account – so proceed with caution.
Delete All iCloud Contacts on Your Mac
As you read above, iCloud keeps your data synced between your signed-in devices. Just like individually or batch deleting contacts, your iPhone will sync with the changes you make on your Mac:
- Open your Contacts app.
- Click to select the first contact in your list.
- Scroll to the bottom of your list and hold the “Shift” key while clicking on the last contact to select it. All contacts should appear highlighted.
- Right-click within the highlighted area and select “Delete Cards” from the menu.
- When the popup box appears, click “Delete” to confirm.
Delete All iCloud Contacts on Your iPhone
If you’re starting to question your future as a trapeze artist, you could be looking for a slightly more careful strategy. If so, you can remove your iCloud contacts from your iPhone while keeping them in iCloud storage and on your other devices:
- Open your iPhone’s Settings.
- Tap your name at the top to open your Apple Account settings.
- Tap “iCloud.”
- Tap “Show All” under Apps Using iCloud, then find Contacts.
- Move the toggle next to “Contacts” to the off position.
- When the confirmation screen pops up, tap “Delete from My iPhone.”
Your synced iCloud contacts will disappear from your iPhone contact list. While the first strategy will erase your contacts, this lets you restore them on your iPhone by toggling “Contacts” on again.
Third-Party Contacts
If you have third-party accounts like Gmail synced to your iPhone, your contact list probably also has contacts linked to those accounts. You can permanently delete your iCloud contacts on your Mac or through the iCloud website. However, for third-party accounts, you can only disable contacts on your iPhone unless you delete them through those accounts. Remember that contacts deleted from a Google account are sent to the trash and permanently deleted by Google after 30 days.
Disable All Third-Party Contacts on Your Mac
Using your Mac makes it easy to disable third-party contacts on your iPhone. If you use Google services alongside your Apple devices, these Google tips can help you get more out of your setup:
- Open your Contacts app.
- Click on “Contacts” in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
- When the “Contacts” menu opens, click on “Settings” (previously labeled “Preferences” in older versions of macOS).
- On the screen that opens, click the Accounts tab.
- Select a third-party account from the box on the left and uncheck “Enable this account.”
- Repeat step 5 until you have disabled all accounts.
Disable All Third-Party Contacts on Your iPhone
You can also disable your third-party contacts on your iPhone. As with iCloud contacts, this will only disable them on your iPhone while leaving them synced to your other devices. If you’re doing a broader digital cleanup, it’s also worth knowing how to delete photos on your iPhone to free up space and how much phone storage you actually need:
- Open your iPhone’s Settings.
- Tap on “Apps,” then tap “Contacts.”
- Tap “Accounts.”
- Choose an account whose contacts you want to disable and tap the name to open.
- Move the toggle next to “Contacts” to the off position.
- When the confirmation screen pops up, tap “Delete from My iPhone.”
- Repeat steps 4-6 until you have disabled all accounts.
