If you have ever dropped your phone in the pool or had it fall out of your pocket while at an amusement park, you know the feeling of dread when assessing the damage. The biggest question you may ask yourself is how much internal and external damage there is and if you should repair or replace your iPhone.

What to Consider When Weighing Whether to Repair or Replace Your iPhone

There are a few critical fundamentals to consider when you’re trying to decide whether it’s better to repair or replace your iPhone. Here are the most important details to keep in mind.

Warranty

Warranties on your phone typically cover specific malfunctions related to mechanical or electrical operations. The warranty you have on your iPhone may cover the cost of the damage depending on how old your phone is and what the damage is. Contact your provider and see if your warranty is still valid or if it can be extended.

Remember that your warranty may not cover certain damages, such as a cracked screen. If you have an iPhone, you can check if it is still under warranty by going into the settings app. Your phone settings will also give you more information, such as the model of your phone, the current software and the storage capacity, which can be helpful when deciding whether to get a newer phone.

Extent of Damage

Assess the extent of damage on your iPhone before determining if it’s worth replacing or not. Enough damage to your phone may leave you with no other option than to replace it entirely, but this may not always be the case. If the damage is only minor, such as a partially cracked screen, it most likely wouldn’t need to be completely replaced.

A cracked iPhone screen or chipped camera can sometimes be repaired for less money than the cost of a used or new iPhone. Third-party screen replacements typically range from $79 to $329 depending on the model, which is often far less than the cost of a new device. However, if your phone has encountered severe damage, such as being dropped from a very high surface or extensive water damage, it may be deserving of replacement.

Phone Age

Think about how long you’ve had your phone when analyzing the benefits and drawbacks to repairing versus replacing an iPhone after damage. If it’s under a year or two old, you likely won’t need an upgrade. If your phone is older, you can more easily justify buying a used or new device because you might’ve wanted an upgrade soon anyway.

Even if your older phone was in good working condition before the damage, replacing it altogether can save you from having to pay for both repairing and replacing costs. Several parts of your phone may not work as well as they used to – a sign that your phone may be too old and need replacing. Some things to look out for in an older phone could be that:

The power or reset button no longer works well

The touchscreen is slow to respond

The camera takes a long time to capture a photo

One or more of your apps crash while you are using them

Budget

Your budget might be one of the most significant deciding factors when considering repairing or replacing your iPhone. You want to ensure you are getting the best possible value for your money. The needs you have for your phone, such as storage and software requirements, may influence how much you are willing to spend on repairing or replacing it. Some damage may be so extensive that it would actually be cheaper to buy a newer phone altogether.

It’s also worth factoring in trade-in value. A broken iPhone can lose 50-70% of its resale value – for example, an iPhone 13 with a cracked screen may only fetch around $150 as a trade-in, compared to roughly $300 if repaired first. In some cases, paying for a repair upfront can actually improve your return when trading in or selling your device.

Some may argue that a phone is a crucial investment. So much can be done on mobile apps, such as banking, emailing, searching the web and keeping you in contact with loved ones who live far away. Luckily, if you are in immediate need of replacing your iPhone, some can come refurbished for around $100 in good condition. If your phone is relatively new and can be fixed with minimal time and money, that might be a more reasonable option.

Storage

Think about what you use the most on your phone and how much storage you usually have. iPhones and smartphones typically have storage capacities ranging anywhere from 512GB to 1TB. You may love to take lots of photos and videos on your phone but consistently run out of storage or have to delete apps and pictures to free up storage.

In this situation, along with whatever damage you may have, it might be a logical idea to upgrade to a new phone that offers more storage. If you don’t feel that you need more space, repairing the phone you currently have is probably more ideal for you.

How Much You Need Your Phone

If you are an excessive daily iPhone user, such as for sending and receiving money or scrolling on social media for hours at a time, factor that in when deciding to repair or replace your phone. You may need your phone on you at all times for other essential reasons, such as caring for a loved one or working remotely.

Smartphones largely play some kind of role in many people’s workdays. In this case, you would need to determine how long it may take to repair your phone and if the waiting period is worth it. Otherwise, it may be more efficient to purchase a newer one online. If you don’t use your phone very often, you might not feel that replacing it is necessary.

When to Consider Repair

Deciding to repair instead of replacing your phone with a brand new model may be both more environmentally friendly and less costly. Though a newer phone may be tempting, you might not have any valid reason to get rid of your current phone if the repair costs are not too high. Most smartphones nowadays can typically provide you with three to four years of use before you need to consider replacing or upgrading them.

The environmental case for repair is significant. According to the UN Global E-waste Monitor, 5.3 billion phones were discarded globally in 2024, and less than 20% of e-waste is properly recycled. Choosing to repair rather than replace is one of the simplest ways to reduce your contribution to this growing problem.

Additionally, you may not be eligible for an upgrade, which would mean that buying a new phone through your phone carrier could cost you a lot of money out of pocket. Choosing to repair your phone may also allow you to enjoy it longer.

Another reason that repairing might be the right route is if you often damage or drop your phone. If so, it may be a better idea to repair your phone instead of buying a newer one that may end up with similar damage eventually anyway.

If you’re comfortable with a hands-on approach, DIY repair kits from providers like iFixit can save you an additional $34-$49 compared to Apple’s out-of-warranty repair costs, particularly for common fixes like battery replacement.

Repairing a phone is typically cheaper than buying a new one if there is minimal damage. With the money you may save choosing to repair your phone, it would be wise to buy a sturdy, protective iPhone case to protect your phone from needing future repairs if you don’t already have one.

Consider a repair if:

There’s minor damage: If the damage on your phone is something minor, such as cosmetic damages that don’t actually impair any of the functions, it may be more cost-effective to go with a repair. Cracked screens and battery issues account for a large share of common repairs, and they are usually straightforward to fix if the damage isn’t too extensive.

You don’t need new features or storage: If you don’t take many pictures or use tons of different apps, you probably won’t need more storage. This is something to think about if the damaged phone belongs to a young child or an elderly person who doesn’t have any use for tons of storage space. This may also be the case if you usually only use your phone for contact reasons, which you probably won’t need or want any fancy new features for.

You don’t need your phone for work and other commitments: If you only use your phone to call others or send emails and texts, a new phone might not seem reasonable to you. For those who don’t spend a lot of time during the day using their phone for work or social media, it might be better to repair your phone instead of replacing it.

When to Choose Replacement

If your phone is damaged beyond repair, a replacement might be the best route. An old or outdated phone may not even be worth the cost of the repairs you need. These older models may also have programming that does not automatically update, making it more difficult to use your phone as time goes on because it will become less compatible with newer apps.

Repair costs can add up quickly depending on your model. As of 2026, Apple’s out-of-warranty battery replacement fees range from $69 for older models like the iPhone SE and iPhone 8, up to $119 for the iPhone 17 Pro series. Screen repairs through third parties can run anywhere from $79 to $329. If you’re looking at multiple repairs on an aging device, replacement may make more financial sense.

Another benefit to replacing your phone is that newer iPhones are usually waterproof to some degree, which can be an essential protection if your phone has experienced water damage. Here are some additional areas you should think about when leaning toward replacing your iPhone:

The damage is extensive or costly: If your phone often shuts down involuntarily, overheats quickly or has consistent issues maintaining battery power, this may merit a replacement. Internal issues may be more difficult and expensive to fix, which may take up more time than setting up a newer phone. Remember the 50% rule – if the repair of the damage will cost you more than half of the price to replace it, don’t go through with the repairs.

The phone is consistently out of storage: You may have a job or hobby that requires you to use your phone for most of the day, such as a photographer, social media manager or remote worker. This may cause your phone to frequently be out of storage if you use too many apps, receive dozens of emails a day, take hundreds of pictures or do other work on your phone. If this happens, it might be beneficial to upgrade to a newer phone with increased storage.

Your phone can no longer update: Depending on your carrier or provider, your phone may no longer have consistent physical or software upgrades available, which can lead to several other technical issues. If your phone is more than a few years old, it may be practical to consider replacing it so you know it will stay up to date with your needs.

Your phone is essential: If you constantly need your phone to stay in contact with others for work or personal reasons or simply feel your phone is an added safety measure, replacing it is worthwhile. If you’re unable to go a day or two without your phone, the repair process may seem too long.

How Much Does Replacing an iPhone Cost?

If you have taken the time to weigh your options and determined that replacing your iPhone fits your needs better, there are many options available. Even if you wish to replace your current iPhone with a newer device, it doesn’t have to break the bank. There are plenty of used and refurbished phone options that allow you to find what works for you. Purchasing a pre-owned phone is a less costly alternative, and it’s more eco-friendly than buying a new one.

Some of the newest iPhone models that are used or refurbished may also be on clearance, where they are much cheaper. Depending on the type of iPhone you currently have and the one you want, you can still find various newer refurbished models with different pricing options. Replacing your iPhone with a used or refurbished one allows you to customize it to your needs just as you can when purchasing a new one in the store.

This customization can include factors such as what carriers it will work on, the condition of the phone, the storage size and color. There are dozens of different options available online for affordable iPhones that are like-new, especially compared to a brand new model. Here are some of the most popular ones:

Whether it was an accident like dropping it in the sink or you didn’t think being on your phone in a sauna could cause any harm, realizing your device isn’t working can bring panic. Buying a new cell phone to replace your damaged one can be expensive – and according to Allstate Protection Plans, the average cost for smartphone repairs and replacements now sits at $302 – so you’d probably like to find another way to get your device working.

There’s good news – you can sometimes salvage a phone with water damage. Repair costs can vary depending on your device and where you go: iPhone water damage repairs usually run $70-$400, but Android repairs usually fall between $50-$250. Apple’s out-of-warranty repairs can cost $269-$699 depending on the model, though AppleCare+ drops that to a flat $99 for accidental damage. Third-party shops usually offer the same repairs for $60-$300 with faster turnaround. Learn how to evaluate your phone’s water damage repair cost and determine if your phone has some more life in it – or if it’s time for a replacement.

What Affects the Cost of Water Damage?

The cost of repair for a water-damaged cell phone can vary widely — it’s tough for a technology repair shop to choose a Samsung or iPhone’s water damage repair cost unless they see its internal parts. That said, iPhone water damage repairs usually run between $70-$400. But Android repairs usually fall in the $50-$250 range. Apple specifically charges $269-$699 for out-of-warranty repairs depending on the model, though that drops to a flat $99 with AppleCare+ for accidental damage. Third-party repair shops manage the same repairs for $60-$300, frequently with faster turnaround times.

Still, you might be able to review your phone to estimate the cost of water damage repair. Think about these things that could affect the cost of repairing a cell phone with water damage:

1. Severity of Damage

The type of damage your phone experienced can vary from mild to severe, and you might not necessarily be able to tell immediately. Water can enter your phone through its charging port, speakers and other openings. If water gets inside, it can stay there for days. Even if your phone is dry on the outside, water could be corroding or rusting internal circuitry.

How do you assess the severity of your cell phone’s water damage? Think about how much water your phone was exposed to. Spilling half a glass of water on your phone will cause less damage than submerging it for a few minutes. The best way to determine the extent of your phone’s damage is to have an expert open it up. Remember that if your data needs to be professionally recovered, repair shops usually charge an extra $50-$150 on top of the base repair cost. If you need the repair done faster, expedited service can add another 20-30% to your total bill.

2. Whether or Not You Have Insurance

Many insurance providers offer electronics insurance that gives cell phone owners a break if their phones experience water damage. These plans are usually affordable, with monthly premiums ranging from $5 to $20. Liquid damage is one of a few accidents that electronics insurance can cover, along with mechanical problems, theft and sometimes loss.

Water damage might not faze you if you have electronics insurance for your cell phone, as the cost of repair will be lower. According to Allstate Protection Plans surveys conducted in 2023, the average cost for smartphone repairs and replacements has reached $302 — a figure that goes to show just how helpful a protection plan can be. Cell phone screen repair spending surged to $8.3 billion in 2023, nearly tripling from $3.4 billion in 2018, which makes insurance coverage more worthwhile than ever.

3. Whether Your Phone Is Water Resistant

Many newer cell phones have a level of water resistance. Phone manufacturers like Apple and Samsung offer water-resistant devices tested in laboratory settings to determine how much water the phones can withstand, and each phone is rated according to ingress protection (IP), a universal measurement for liquid resistance.

A rating of IP68 means the phone can be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes, though some phones carrying the IP68 designation are rated for greater maximum depths. Even though a phone’s water resistance rating suggests it’s less likely to sustain water damage, it’s no guarantee that your phone is immune from water damage — and it’s worth mentioning that water damage is not covered under standard manufacturer warranties even on IP-rated devices.

Apple gives a list of water-resistant iPhones. You can also find a list of Samsung’s IP-rated cell phones. A water-resistant phone may sustain less internal damage from exposure, potentially lowering your repair cost compared to a non-rated device in the same situation.

4. Type of Phone

The age, type and model of your cell phone can also affect how much it costs to repair it after water damage. If you have a newer cell phone, the cost of repair is usually higher than for an older phone, because the latest devices have innovative technology and the newest parts. These parts are more expensive to buy and, so, more expensive to repair.

That means your brand-new cell phone might cost you more to repair than an older model. For example, the water damage repair cost on an older iPhone model is likely considerably less than repairing a latest-generation iPhone 16 Pro or Samsung Galaxy S25. As flagship phones continue to push the boundaries of display and chip technology, the cost of sourcing and replacing those premium internal parts only goes up.

How to Tell if Your Phone Is Fixable

If your phone has been water damaged, you could be trying to stay away from taking your cell phone in to see the tech doctor – at least for now. Fortunately, you can do a few things to determine if your phone is fixable. Ask yourself these questions to decide if your phone is repairable:

1. Does It Turn On?

You may be tempted to immediately turn on your phone after retrieving it from the water to see if it’s still working – this isn’t a good idea since water is a conductor of electricity. The power surging through your phone could ruin it.

Instead, power your phone off as soon as you dry it off. If there’s any leftover water inside your device, turning it off can prevent further damage to the internal circuitry. It’s best to wait at least 48 hours before turning on or charging your phone – maybe a hard wait, but it matters. If your phone powers on after this time, it’s probably fixable.

2. Have You Removed the SIM Card?

Give your phone a fighting chance by removing everything from it you can; it can protect expensive elements from water damage and help the phone dry out better. You should make sure that the phone is externally dry before taking this step.

Remove the SIM card as soon as possible. You can open the SIM tray on iPhones with a paper clip or a SIM-eject tool. For a Samsung device, the SIM tray is usually accessible via an eject tool as well. Most modern Samsung phones no longer have removable backs or batteries. Keep your SIM card in case you can salvage some of your phone’s stored data.

Here are a few other pieces you can remove to help your phone dry:

The phone case

The screen protector

The memory card (if your device has one)

The stylus (if applicable)

3. Have You Tried Removing the Water?

You probably toweled your phone off immediately after you got it wet – this dried off your cell phone’s surface. But since water can also be inside your device, try to remove it from the inside before taking it to a repair shop.

Here are some of the best methods for removing water from inside a phone:

Open air: One of the best ways to dry your phone is by setting it out in warm, open air. The air evaporates the moisture effectively, although this process might take several days. You can place your phone in an area with some ambient warmth, but avoid external heat sources like hair dryers, as excessive heat can damage internal components and circuitry.

Silica gel: Silica gel – found in the form of crystal cat litter or silica gel packets – is one of the most effective drying agents available. Place your phone in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag and cover it with silica beads. Leave it for at least 24 to 48 hours before attempting to turn it on.

Instant couscous or rice: If silica gel isn’t on hand, instant couscous or instant rice from your pantry can help absorb moisture in a pinch. These work better than uncooked white rice because the instant varieties absorb water more quickly. Place your phone in an airtight container covered with the couscous or rice and wait at least 24 hours. Note that this method is considered a last resort, as food particles can occasionally find their way into ports and openings.

If none of these different methods get your phone working again, it may be time to visit a repair shop. Water damage repair for an iPhone usually runs between $70 and $400. But Android repairs usually range from $50 to $250 at third-party shops. If you have AppleCare+, Apple charges a flat $99 for accidental damage repairs – savings compared to out-of-warranty costs of $269 to $699 depending on the model. Remember that if data recovery is needed, professional shops may charge an extra $50 to $150, and rush service can add another 20 to 30% to the total bill.

The Cost to Repair a Phone

Taking your cell phone to a professional is sometimes the only way to know how damaged it is. However, the cost to repair your phone could be more than the device is worth.

While the cost to repair a water-damaged phone changes by repair shop, phone model and severity of the damage, the expense is likely to fall on a number. Let’s talk about what you can expect:

1. With Insurance

If you have cell phone insurance, all you’ll pay to have your water-damaged phone repaired is your deductible. Your deductible can vary according to your insurance provider. For example, AppleCare+ covers accidental damage for a flat $99 deductible. Other providers have deductibles as low as $29. Remember that some devices might prompt a higher deductible than others.

Many cell phone insurance providers allow you to take your phone to a local repair shop. Others will accept mailed-in phones or give you home visits from their technicians. Check with your insurance provider’s policy to see what coverage you have.

2. Without Insurance

Having phone damage insurance can considerably cut back on the cost of repairing a phone with water damage. But this insurance is pretty underutilized. According to Allstate Protection Plans surveys, the average cost for smartphone repairs and replacements has reached $302 – a figure that goes to show just how expensive going without coverage can be. Spending on cellphone screen repairs alone surged to $8.3 billion in 2023, nearly tripling from $3.4 billion in 2018.

The cost to repair a water-damaged phone can depend on the type of damage, your phone’s model and where you get it repaired. Some water damage repair means a liquid cleaning and others need replacement parts and labor. Here’s a general overview of what to expect:

Apple (out-of-warranty): $269-$699 depending on model, or a flat $99 with AppleCare+

Third-party repair shops (iPhone): $70-$400

Third-party repair shops (Android): $50-$250

Third-party shops vs. Apple: Third-party shops typically charge $60-$300 and often offer faster turnaround times

Data recovery: Can add an extra $50-$150 to the total bill

Rush/expedited service: Expect to pay 20-30% more for faster repairs

What to Do if Your Phone Is Beyond Repair

Maybe you’ve tried multiple home remedies that haven’t helped your waterlogged cell phone. If the cost of having a professional repair it seems too expensive, what should you do with it? Ridding your phone of water damage can be more trouble than it’s worth.

Consider your options for what to do with your water-damaged phone:

1. Calculate the Cost

First, determine if your phone is worth more broken or repaired. You can calculate your phone’s net value after the necessary repairs by:

Finding the current value of your cell phone based on its model and condition

Determining the cost of repair for water damage

Subtracting the cost of the repair or your insurance deductible from the phone’s value

Repair costs can vary depending on where you go and what device you own. Apple charges between $269 and $699 for out-of-warranty water damage repairs depending on the model, though AppleCare+ cuts that down to a flat $99 for accidental damage. Third-party repair shops usually charge $60-$300 for the same work and usually give you faster turnaround. In general, water damage repair for an iPhone runs around $70-$400, while Android repairs tend to fall in the $50-$250 range. Remember that data recovery services can add another $50-$150, and rush service fees can tack on an extra 20-30% to the total bill.

According to Allstate Protection Plans, the average cost for smartphone repairs and replacements is $302 – a figure that puts the true expense of water damage in perspective. If repairing your phone would leave it with a comparable resale value, having it fixed might make sense. Once you know the repair cost, compare it against what your phone is worth in its current broken state before making a choice.

2. Sell or Recycle It

If professional repair isn’t an option for your phone, you can always sell it broken or recycle it. Many businesses will buy water-damaged cell phones, though some will consider a phone with water damage as broken. The amount you can expect for a water-damaged phone can depend on the extent of the damage and if the water triggered its water damage indicator. You can put any cash you get toward buying a replacement phone.

Recycling is an eco-friendly way to get rid of a water-damaged cell phone. While most smartphone owners still don’t recycle their used devices, doing so is healthier for the environment than sending them to landfills. The smartphone repair market has grown dramatically – cellphone screen repair spending alone surged to $8.3 billion in 2023, nearly tripling from $3.4 billion in 2018, according to Allstate Protection Plans research. That growth reflects just how many devices are damaged each year, which makes responsible disposal more important than ever. While you aren’t likely to get much money back recycling a damaged phone, you’re helping reduce pollution, which is a rewarding feeling.

3. Buy Used

If your phone is old or you were already due for an upgrade, it may be better to forego the repairs and buy a new device. Repairing extensive water damage and replacing multiple parts of your device can be as expensive or more so than simply replacing your cell phone.

If you’re in the market for a new cell phone but want to stay away from paying full price, shop at Gazelle. We give you used Apple, Samsung and Android phones with certified quality for a fraction of the cost of a new phone.
1. Morning ($0.99)

2. Spotify (Free or $9.99/mo with premium subscription).

3. Google Chrome (Free)

While the Safari browser that comes with your iPad is fine for browsing, Google Chrome offers a slightly more intuitive navigation and voice-enabled searching.

4. Facebook (Free)

Sync your bank accounts, credit cards, and other financial accounts to Mint and it will show you exactly how and where you’re spending your money, and help you stay on top of upcoming bills.

9. Dashlane (Free)

Stop stressing out about remembering all of your passwords. Upload them to this password manager and you’ll always be able to access your accounts.

Even for those who already own an iPhone, the iPad is an entirely new proposition. Read this iPad guide to get started with your new device.

1. Restoring Data from iCloud

If you already own a MacBook or an iPhone, connecting your iPad to either device will initiate a sync of your personal files. It’s an effortless and easy way to bring your photos, files and music from one device to another. Make sure to have iTunes installed on your computer to make this process easier, especially if you’re connecting to a PC. Also, check that your iPad has enough memory compared to your computer or phone – you may have to selectively move the files that you want.

2. The App Store

Before you begin installing any apps, you’ll need to make sure you have created an Apple ID. You will be prompted to sign in with your existing ID or create one after activating the device. If you don’t have one or aren’t prompted, follow these steps:

From the Home screen, Tap Settings > iTunes and App Stores

Tap “Create Apple ID”

You’ll have to agree to the terms and conditions when prompted. Having an Apple ID is essential. Even if you’re downloading free apps, you’ll have to re-enter your password or Touch ID for each installation. This failsafe is to prevent your little ones from downloading a “free” app and racking up dozens of in-app purchases.

Once you’re signed in, click on the App Store from the Home Screen to install a few essential programs.

3. A Reading Rainbow

Most people use their iPads to read books that are too wide to view on a phone or too big to stow in carry-on luggage. iBooks is pre-installed on your home screen, so you can start reading Apple’s offerings right away.

However, the Amazon Kindle store has many more options, and you don’t have to own an Amazon device. Simply install the Kindle app and download books from Amazon’s immense digital catalog.

4. A Musical Interlude

If you want to keep your phone in your pocket when hosting a party, the iPad is perfect to keep tunes going during game night. The Music option is located at the bottom right of the Dock. The Dock, which holds apps that are always anchored at the bottom of the screen, doesn’t change even as you download more apps.

You can purchase a $9.99/month Apple Music subscription, or you can download any number of free apps with paid options, such as Pandora and Spotify. However, Apple Music is better integrated with Siri, so you can tell Siri, “Play jazz music” right before your date walks through the door.

These tips should get you off to a good start with your new iPad. Want to dive deeper? Take a look at these 10 iPad tricks you didn’t know existed.

Though the Galaxy S7 is making waves, the S6 is a smart buy for those looking for an affordable high-end smartphone. Here are some features that set it apart from its toughest competitors.

1. LoopPay

I know what you’re thinking – I’m tired of these apps that let me pay with my phone but are only recognized by select retailers with special equipment. Well fear no more. LoopPay absorbs all of your information, encrypts it, and allows you to pay without any additional hardware. Hold it up to a regular credit card machine, and watch it work its magic.

2. Edge Clock

No more picking up and swiping your phone to check the time. A clock always at the very edge of the screen is a little added convenience that will save you the trouble of fumbling with your alarm in bed.

3. Auto Answer with Bluetooth

If you have a Bluetooth device connected, the Galaxy automatically connects your call by default. No more struggling to get your phone out of your pocket when you’re driving or riding your bike to work.

4. A Better TV Remote

Tired of that giant oblong monstrosity with a thousand buttons? Turn your Galaxy into a TV remote by downloading the WatchOn app. You can control everything even from other rooms, ensuring your household channel surfing control.

5. Stay Right There!

If you’re doing a lot of reading and want a quick-activated screen time-out, use Smart Stay. Under Settings > My Device > Smart Screen, select “Smart Stay.” As if by magic, your device will track when you’re actually reading from the screen.

6. Speedy Downloads

Activate the “Download Booster” to stream large files using both WiFi and a cellular network at the same time. It’s ideal when in a hurry to download important videos or other hefty blocks of data.

Who knew you could open the Internet floodgates so easily?

7. Kids Mode

Speaking of floodgates, the Internet continues to be a dangerous and potentially expensive place for children. Find the “Galaxy Essentials” at the top of your home screen. Download the Kids Mode app to block off parts of your phone that you don’t want your kids to see – or purchase – without your permission. Kid-friendly apps will automatically populate the home screen for as long as Kids Mode is activated.

These seven highlights are just the beginning of a constellation of awesome features for Galaxy owners.

MacBooks are extremely user friendly. The best way to learn is to just start using it, a lot. But getting started can be overwhelming. Here's how to get up and running.

The easiest way to get up and running on any computer is to just start using it, a lot. MacBooks, in particular, are extremely user friendly and once you’ve gotten used to OS X, you can quickly get up to speed on pretty much any machine. Still, if you’re not familiar with Macs or you it’s new to you,it can be a daunting task. Follow these steps to get started.

1. Start the setup process.

When you turn on your MacBook for the first time, the Setup Assistant will lead you through start-up process, which includes selecting your country, creating an account (or multiple accounts if you’ll be sharing the computer), connecting to a local Wi-Fi network, and choosing your privacy settings.

2. Enter your Apple ID.

The Setup Assistant will prompt you to enter your Apple ID while you’re logging on for the first time. This is the login and account that’s associated with your iTunes account, if you have one. This will allow you to re-download apps and music that you’ve previously purchased without paying for them again.

If you skip this step during setup, you can enter it later by clicking on “System Preferences” and then “iCloud.” You’ll need to enter a credit card for the initial setup, but you can later change your preferred payment method to “none” if you don’t want a card linked to the account.

3. Beef up your security.

As data and information become increasingly valuable to criminals, it’s more important than ever for computer users to take precautions to protect themselves. Start by setting your MacBook to require a password once a screen saver kicks in, especially if you plan on using your MacBook often in public places.

Then, download apps only from the Mac store or other trusted Web sites, and turn on FireVault Disc Encryption, an option in Apple’s newer operating systems that will automatically encrypt everything on your hard drive. Speaking of operating systems, make sure that you’ve always got the latest one (see #5) to ensure you’ve got any security fixes rolled out by Apple.

4. Migrate files from your old computer.

In the past, one of the most frustrating parts of setting up a new computer has always been migrating music, documents, and data from your old machine to the new one. While it’s still a somewhat cumbersome process, it’s gotten much smoother. Make sure both computers are connected to the same network (such as your home Wi-Fi network), and then use the Migration Assistant tool in the Utilities folder on your MacBook, which will walk you through the process.

Alternatively, if you use iCloud or a cloud storage service like DropBox, you may be able to simply upload relevant files from the old computer to the cloud and then download them as needed.

5. Check for OS X update.

It’s important to keep your software up to date, both because it will keep your computer more secure and because newer apps and programs may not run as well on older operating systems. Even brand new MacBooks may not have the very latest software. To make sure you have the latest version, open the App Store and click on the “Updates” icon on the tool bar. This will allow you to update both your operating system and any apps with new releases. Then restart the computer and check to see if there are any other updates, because some won’t become available until others have already been installed.

Whether you’re a newly minted iPad Pro patron, a fan of the compact iPad Mini, or an aficionado of the classic design, every iPad owner can benefit from a little refresher on Apple’s flagship tablet. We’ve compiled these ten iPad tips and tricks to improve your tablet experience.

1. Orientation Lock

Newcomers to the iPad may find there’s nothing quite as frustrating as trying to read in bed while your orientation – landscape or portrait – keeps shifting. In the latest iPads, the Orientation Lock button is on the side of the device above the volume controls. It can also be configured under Settings > General to serve as the Mute button instead.

Personally, I use Orientation Lock more than Mute. Stick with the default.

2. A Personal White Noise Machine

When I’m traveling on long flights, my iPad is a godsend. I don’t have to waste my iPhone battery or shell out more money for noise-cancelling headphones. With the Sleep Pillow app, I can let the sounds of the ocean soothe me to sleep through a steady stream of white noise. It’s a lifesaver in a noisy hotel room too.

3. This Message Will Self-Destruct

If you have sensitive information on your iPad (I’m looking at you, Important Government Official), you can set it to completely wipe after 10 failed passcode log-in attempts. Navigate to Settings > Passcode > Erase Data.

4. Charging Quirks

As a new owner, I was often frustrated when my iPad wouldn’t charge on certain USB ports. I finally figured out that in some PCs, not all USB ports are created equal. If your current port isn’t charging, just try out another one. The one closer to the front of your desktop or laptop is your best bet.

5. Lost and Found

The first minute you get your iPad, make sure to enable Find My iPad. If you leave it under a couch cushion or in a gym bag, the activated app will set off a sonar-sounding noise to direct you to the iPad’s location. The setting is easy to activate under Settings > iCloud at the bottom left of the screen.

6. AirPrint

AirPrint, available under the Share button in your browser, allows you to quickly print from your iPad. It’s great for when you need an extra copy of a critical document that someone forgot to bring to the meeting.

7. CapsLock

Trying to type in all capital letters can be a major annoyance without the benefit of a physical keyboard. Instead of pressing Shift once, tap it twice to lock All Caps.

8. Jump from App to App

Instead of using the Home button or navigating back to the main screen each time, use 4 fingers and swipe Left or Right to move among already-open apps.

9. Uninterrupted FaceTime

FaceTime no longer pauses your connection when you exit the app during a call. If you press the Home button while Facetiming, your loved one will automatically overlap with your favorite app.

10. A Constant Slideshow

Turn your living room into a vacation showcase with a photo slide show. Tap the Picture Frame icon located to the right of the slide-to-unlock bar on the lock screen. It’s much more efficient and versatile than an expensive, separate digital frame.

There’s even more to learn about the iPad, but I’m confident that you can avoid my first-timer mistakes with this quick list. These techniques apply to models old and new, refurbished and retail.

Sometimes the most streamlined, easy-to-use products are also the most fragile. Here’s four simple ways to protect your iPad.

The post How to Protect Your iPad with 4 Simple Steps Adam Edgerton appeared first on Gazelle The Horn.

iPads take days to build, but can be ruined in a mere second. Take these four simple steps to best protect your iPad or favorite tablet.

1. Cover It

iPad screens are most susceptible to damage. Protect it. The Apple Smart Cover is a decent start, but at the end of the day, it’s just a piece of flexible plastic and may not perform when your device plummets to the ground. Screen protectors are a solid investment, and Gazelle has some for only $15. Don’t fall for the more expensive options that use phrases like “self-healing.”

2. Encase It

A simple cover may not be enough, especially if you’re dealing with young children or clumsy adults. Check out Lifehacker’s 5 best cases and perhaps even splurge on the all-terrain survival case if you plan on taking your iPad camping. Whitewater rafting has never been so risk-free.

OtterBox is the #1 selling case for tablets, but it may not be the best use of your money if you’re an average user. Plus, a bulky case makes it much harder to fit into bags and purses.

3. Insure It

I learned the hard way that iPad warranties aren’t what they used to be as they become more affordable and therefore more disposable. Opt for AppleCare if you buy retail as $99 is still better than a whole new device. Or, make use of Gazelle’s warranty if you buy refurbished. Using an American Express or similar credit card to buy your iPad may also include insurance. Check the fine print to see if your new (or gently used) purchase is already covered.

4. Secure It

I’ve no problem with my iPad at the beach without an expensive case, but I’ve still managed to ruin the screen by not storing it securely. Be careful if you fall asleep on the couch while reading. You might roll over and wake up to a smashed tablet!

Accidents happen regardless of how old or how careful you are. Follow this advice to make sure that your iPad makes it through the year intact.

Whether you’re paying for childcare or paying for college, the latest electronics for kids rarely comes cheap and can often seem out of reach. Stick to these three simple principles to keep down your kid’s tech costs.

1. Timing is Everything

There are plenty of deals to be had for those who keep a close eye for online deals. New Egg’s Daily Deals is a site worth bookmarking in your browser. A quick check every day could save you hundreds of dollars.

If you’re looking for a laptop, big retail websites like Best Buy’s Deal of the Day provide ample opportunity to save your wallet from pain all year round. Those who only use Microsoft Word and an Internet connection can forgo all the latest hardware specs. Shop for an affordable laptop that’s perfect for crafting those late-night term papers.

Good things come to those who wait for the best possible deal.

2. Not-Worth-It Warranties

Many parents, worried that a new phone will wind up in a puddle or worse, take out generous warranty policies on their electronic purchases. Make sure to read the fine print, as you might be paying extra for something you don’t really need – or paying too much for something that doesn’t even cover water damage. There’s nothing worse than spending money every month, only to discover that spilled milk voided the insurance policy. An incomplete warranty can be money wasted and certainly something to cry about.

3. Give Used or Refurbished

I received a used iPad Mini last year – and until recently I had no idea it wasn’t straight from the box. So kids definitely won’t know the difference if you bought it refurbished. They only care that it works.

After dropping my iPad on hardwood flooring, I found out the hard way that Apple no longer even offers to repair iPad Minis for its lower-end models. The best you’ll manage is a $50 in-store credit toward a brand new device. I was better off taking my tablet to an off-market mall kiosk. Buying a used iPad from Gazelle could go a lot further than replacing it at the Apple Store.

Just because something’s new doesn’t mean that it’s built to last. Give the gift of used electronics and invest the leftover budget saved in a heartfelt accessory – like a hard case to protect your hard-won deal.
