Before you begin installing any apps, you’ll need to make sure you have created an Apple ID. You will be prompted to sign in with your existing ID or create one after activating the device. If you don’t have one or aren’t prompted, follow these steps:

• From the Home screen, Tap Settings > iTunes and App Stores
• Tap “Create Apple ID”

You’ll have to agree to the terms and conditions when prompted. Having an Apple ID is essential. Even if you’re downloading free apps, you’ll have to re-enter your password or Touch ID for each installation. This failsafe is to prevent your little ones from downloading a “free” app and racking up dozens of in-app purchases.

The excitement is palpable as these are two stunning looking handsets, each sporting glass on the front and backs of the devices, which greatly adds to the elegant aesthetics. We’re only a short setup process away from enjoying all that and more. So let’s get right to it.

1.  First Boot & Data Transfer

First, let’s get that new SIM card installed. Then upon first bootup the user is greeted with an initial Setup Wizard screen where default language and accessibility options are found. GottabeMobile also notes, this is where users can take “…steps to get their phone connected to Wi-Fi, Google and Samsung accounts, and it helps the user transfer data from another phone or download it from an earlier backup.” Here Samsung has deployed a couple of options, which work whether your previous device was a Samsung handset, another Android device or even an iPhone. Simply use the included USB charging cable and connect it to the included dongle, which then connects to your Galaxy S7 device. Now plug the cable into your previous Android device. If transferring from an iPhone, then connect the iPhone to the USB end of the dongle using the iPhone Lightning cable. For this method users will need to use the included Smart Switch app and select “Backup and reset” to begin data transfer from an iPhone.

2.  Activating SIM

From there, the phone activation wizard will initialize as your carrier activates your device over your network of choice. The process takes about 5 minutes in total. The user is then made aware of location-based sharing with certain apps such as maps, shopping, weather and the like.

3.  Restore From Backup

Now that you’ve transferred over your old data, let’s take a look at backing it all up on your new Galaxy S7 device. There are a number of 3^rd party apps users can use to backup photos. OneDrive, DropBox, Google Photos, and Flickr are just a few, with companion mobile and desktop versions of their applications to use for backing up your photos.

Samsung has also tossed in their own backup functionality. Again, enter Smart Switch and tap “Back up and Reset.” Once in users can select “Back up my data,” found under “Samsung account.” You can choose “Auto back up” for a regular hourly back up of all your data. This will work automatically as long as the unit is connected to WiFi. You can also pick and choose which features you would like to back up. Options include Clock (includes alarms and clock options), Messages for Samsung message app, Phone and Phone settings.

4.  Updating Apps

With any Android update we recommend manually updating apps or grabbing a 3^rd party back up agent like App Backup & Restore to automatically backup, restore and transfer your favorite apps.

1.  Orientation Lock

Newcomers to the iPad may find there’s nothing quite as frustrating as trying to read in bed while your orientation – landscape or portrait – keeps shifting. In the latest iPads, the Orientation Lock button is on the side of the device above the volume controls. It can also be configured under Settings > General to serve as the Mute button instead.

Personally, I use Orientation Lock more than Mute. Stick with the default.

2.  A Personal White Noise Machine

When I’m traveling on long flights, my iPad is a godsend. I don’t have to waste my iPhone battery or shell out more money for noise-cancelling headphones. With the Sleep Pillow app, I can let the sounds of the ocean soothe me to sleep through a steady stream of white noise. It’s a lifesaver in a noisy hotel room too.

3.  This Message Will Self-Destruct

If you have sensitive information on your iPad (I’m looking at you, Important Government Official), you can set it to completely wipe after 10 failed passcode log-in attempts. Navigate to Settings > Passcode > Erase Data.

4.  Charging Quirks

As a new owner, I was often frustrated when my iPad wouldn’t charge on certain USB ports. I finally figured out that in some PCs, not all USB ports are created equal. If your current port isn’t charging, just try out another one. The one closer to the front of your desktop or laptop is your best bet.

5.  Lost and Found

The first minute you get your iPad, make sure to enable Find My iPad. If you leave it under a couch cushion or in a gym bag, the activated app will set off a sonar-sounding noise to direct you to the iPad’s location. The setting is easy to activate under Settings > iCloud at the bottom left of the screen.

6.  AirPrint

AirPrint, available under the Share button in your browser, allows you to quickly print from your iPad. It’s great for when you need an extra copy of a critical document that someone forgot to bring to the meeting.

7.  CapsLock

Trying to type in all capital letters can be a major annoyance without the benefit of a physical keyboard. Instead of pressing Shift once, tap it twice to lock All Caps.

8.  Jump from App to App

Instead of using the Home button or navigating back to the main screen each time, use 4 fingers and swipe Left or Right to move among already-open apps.

9.  Uninterrupted FaceTime

FaceTime no longer pauses your connection when you exit the app during a call. If you press the Home button while Facetiming, your loved one will automatically overlap with your favorite app.

10.  A Constant Slideshow

Turn your living room into a vacation showcase with a photo slide show. Tap the Picture Frame icon located to the right of the slide-to-unlock bar on the lock screen. It’s much more efficient and versatile than an expensive, separate digital frame.

The Surface Pro 4 bears a striking resemblance to its strongest competitor, Apple’s iPad Pro, which received a lot of attention for its impressively large display, accompanying stylus (aka Apple Pencil) and Smart Keyboard.

Thinking of upgrading your iPad? We took a look at these two products side-by-side. Here’s what we think.

What’s the Difference? Primarily, Nothing

Specs and features do vary a bit, but many of the so-called “innovative” attributes are very similar between both tablets, most noticeably the stylus. Both the Apple Pencil and Surface Pen are designed for a natural writing experience, sensitive to pressure and tilt, a plus for anyone seeking precision and accuracy. Other similarities include the fingerprint reader, personal assistant (iPad’s Siri and Surface’s Cortana) and redesigned keyboards.

Both devices are also focused on bridging the gap between tablets and laptops, merging portability with performance. In a recent poll, 40% of people believed the iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard could do all the functions of a computer. You’ll have to answer for yourself whether a tablet is suitable for your computing needs.

Let’s Talk About the Price

Aside from your loyalty to either Apple or Microsoft products, the main difference here is price, but not by much. Both devices are competing at the high-end of the tablet market with starting prices of $799 and $899 for the iPad and Surface, respectively.

Plus, if you want the Apple Pencil (and you will), you’ll pay an additional $99, while the Surface Pen is included with a Microsoft purchase.

Which One Should You Buy?

The Surface Pro 4 will be available on October 26, with the iPad Pro coming sometime in November, so we can’t be sure about performance until we put them to the test.

Our gut tells us the iPad Pro will be better suited for designers, business owners and artists, while the Surface Pro 4 will be the choice of students and the every-day computer user. This has largely to do with Windows 10, designed to be a fluid operating system responsive to different types of hardware. This means a Windows user can easily upgrade to the Surface Pro 4 and replace their existing tablet and computer, only needing one device.

Current iPad users, however, are less inclined to upgrade to the iPad Pro (or replace their MacBooks). Apple is targeting professionals who could benefit from the large surface and precise motions.
