Pencils? Check. Notebooks? Check. Backpack? Check. State-of-the-art smartphone? Wait, what?

You know it, because you’re probably already hearing it from your kids: back-to-school lists have gone high-tech. While you weren’t looking, your kid’s most-wanted school supply went from a cartoon character backpack and colorful pencil case to a $1200 phone that, let’s face it, they’re more interested in for their social life than for social studies. But the truth is that kids do need that tech now more than ever before.

As much as we might want to ‘back in my day’ the situation, modern academics are built around technology. Writing and turning in assignments, researching projects, putting together presentations, and even talking to teachers is done digitally through email and school communication apps. Today, learning to use this tech is as much part of education as math and history, but while 94% of US schools claim to provide essential tech to students in need, these underpowered Chromebooks just aren’t preparing kids for the real world. In ecoATM’s survey of 1,000 parents of school-aged children conducted with Pollfish, 65% said they considered buying new tech for their children once a year, with 56% expressing the need for modern devices to ensure their child has technology literacy.

Yet even as parents come around to the idea of purchasing a smartphone or other piece of tech for their children, one factor is shouting alarm bells from the rooftops—the price. It’s not just the mounting costs of extracurriculars, the looming spectre of high-priced college, the fact that teenagers could rival a professional basketball team with the amount of food they eat, or the fact that life in general is just more expensive these days. It’s the fact that kids just don’t take care of their stuff.

Nearly half of these parents (49%) said they are purchasing tech replacements at least once a year! Shelling out $800 for the least expensive new iPhone stings, but doing it twice a year is madness!

The vast majority of teens who drive wind up in used cars, but only 32% of parents consider looking into used or refurbished tech. I’m sorry, what?

Pre-owned devices are the ultimate pick for parents who want to get their kids the tech they need but know in their hearts they’ll end up replacing it well before it’s time for an upgrade. The best part? Kids can’t tell the difference between a brand new phone and a certified preowned one. As smartphone innovation has slowed, so has the need to spring for this years tech. The emojis are the same, the apps work the same, and for connoisseurs of a certain fruit-named brand, the text bubbles are still blue.

Pre-owned tech saves you hundreds of dollars you can use for the rest of their back-to-school supplies, and they still get tech that’s only a generation or two behind but can do all the schoolwork (and more) they need to do. It’s an easy way to help your back-to-school budget make the grade and get a gold star from your teen.

Before 2007, the hottest phone on the market was the iconic Motorola Razr V3 (or the Blackberry if you spent 80% of your time in “crucial meetings”). But then the Apple iPhone entered the chat, with the first Android devices joining the market the following year. Ever since, the revolutionary smartphone has taken the world by storm, worming its way into the hands of everyone from the age of 9 to 99. In fact, as of 2024, 310 million Americans reported that they own a smartphone – that’s 97% of the population!

However, a recent trend indicates that smartphone saturation may have reached its peak. More and more Gen Zers – those born from the mid-to-late 1990s through the early 2010s – are ditching their smartphones in favor of “dumbphones,” the practically indestructible devices their parents used to use. From 2021 to 2024, 18- to 24-year-olds led a staggering 148% spike in “brick phone” sales, while their smartphone use actually dropped 12%, according to the peer-reviewed journal Partners Universal Innovative Research Publication.

The numbers back it up further: a Morning Consult survey found that 16% of Gen Z adults say they currently own a dumbphone – the highest of any generation – and 28% expressed interest in acquiring one, more than double Gen X (13%) and baby boomers (9%). Meanwhile, market research firm Mintel found that 60% of Gen Z say they want to be less connected to the digital world on a daily basis. A 2024 Harris Poll of 1,006 Gen Z adults, conducted alongside social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, found that more than 1 in 5 wished smartphones had never been invented at all – and 50% wished X didn’t exist, 47% TikTok, and 43% Snapchat.

To be clear, this is still a niche development – U.S. feature phone sales accounted for only about 2% of all handset sales in 2023, representing roughly 2.8 million units. But the momentum is real. HMD, the maker of the rebooted Nokia 3310, reported that sales of the phone had doubled since its 2017 relaunch, as of 2023. So, what’s driving Zoomers back to these stripped-down devices – and are they as good at T9 as their Millennial predecessors?

Key Takeaways

Gen Z leads a 148% spike in brick phone sales from 2021–2024, while their smartphone use dropped 12%.

16% of Gen Z adults already own a dumbphone — higher than any other generation — and 28% want one.

60% of Gen Zers want less daily digital connectivity, and over 1 in 5 wish smartphones were never invented.

Key motivators include escaping doom-scrolling, protecting privacy, nostalgia, and using dumbphones as fashion statements.

School smartphone bans and parental concerns are also pushing younger users toward simpler, less distracting devices.

What are Dumbphones?

Dumbphones – also popularly referred to as feature phones – do away with most apps and features of modern smartphones. In other words, they don’t have any fun stuff, but they also don’t have many of the negative attributes of smartphones either.

As someone whose first mobile phone was a Motorola MicroTAC, I can assure you that even the cheapest modern dumbphone is still way more powerful than the phones we carried around when I was a kid. (The MicroTAC was too big to fit in my pocket and it couldn’t even send texts.) Still, today’s dumbphones are pretty barebones devices – and that’s actually a huge part of the appeal.

These phones focus primarily on calls, text messages, and some basic internet functions like email. And the market for them is quietly growing. U.S. feature phone sales reached an estimated 2.8 million units in 2023 – about 2% of all handset sales. That might sound small, but the momentum behind it tells an interesting story.

Not only are companies now creating new dumbphones, but several models from a bygone era are making a comeback as well. For instance, the classic Nokia 3310 “brick” phone – which nearly every Millennial and Gen Xer was completely obsessed with in the early 2000s – was relaunched by HMD in 2017, and its sales had already doubled by 2023, according to The Guardian. (Don’t worry, it’s not that much better than the original…it’s still pretty dumb.)

Meanwhile, from 2021 to 2024, 18- to 24-year-olds led a 148% spike in “brick phone” sales, while their smartphone use dropped 12%, according to the peer-reviewed journal Partners Universal Innovative Research Publication. A Morning Consult survey found that 16% of Gen Z adults say they currently own a dumbphone – the highest of any generation – and 28% expressed interest in getting one, more than double the rate of Gen X (13%) and baby boomers (9%).

The “why” behind all of this is becoming clearer, too. According to market research firm Mintel, 60% of Gen Z say they want to be less connected to the digital world on a daily basis. A 2024 Harris Poll conducted alongside social psychologist Jonathan Haidt found that more than 1 in 5 Gen Z adults wished smartphones had never been invented at all – and roughly half wished platforms like X, TikTok, and Snapchat didn’t exist.

So, of all generations, why are Zoomers the ones leading the charge to go back to more low-tech devices? And will other generations follow their lead, or is their smartphone addiction already beyond help?

Why are Zoomers Transitioning Back to Dumbphone Usage?

There are quite a few reasons why some people – particularly Gen Zers – enjoy the stripped-down nature of a dumbphone. The concept of “doom-scrolling” is all too familiar for many people these days. Some of us simply can’t help ourselves from spending countless hours scrolling through bad news on X (formerly known as Twitter) or comparing ourselves to influencers on Instagram or TikTok.

Living in the Moment

By swapping out a smartphone for a dumbphone, Zoomers prevent themselves from participating in doom-scrolling. Instead, they’re actually participating in hobbies like reading books and newspapers, conversing with those around them, or picking up crafting. If that sounds boring, that’s kind of the point!

Dumbphones allow users to be more present in their daily lives, a concept that Zoomers are clearly latching onto. According to the market research firm Mintel, 60% of Gen Zers say they want to be less connected to the digital world on a day-to-day basis. And a 2024 Harris Poll – conducted alongside social psychologist Jonathan Haidt – found that more than 1 in 5 Gen Z adults wished smartphones had never been invented at all. Half of those surveyed wished X didn’t exist, 47% said the same about TikTok, and 43% about Snapchat.

The numbers back this sentiment up in a tangible way too. From 2021 to 2024, 18- to 24-year-olds led a 148% spike in “brick phone” sales, while their smartphone use actually dropped 12% over the same period, according to the peer-reviewed journal Partners Universal Innovative Research Publication. It might seem strange that Zoomers are setting aside TikTok in favor of a good old-fashioned dumbphone, but the data increasingly confirms it!

Modern Trend-Setting and Nostalgic Yearning

Some Zoomers say their dumbphones can be fascinating conversation starters, as people often ask about their stripped-down devices and why they chose them. Others see them as a cutting-edge fashion trend – dumbphones as a fashion accessory draw attention in ways that widespread devices like iPhones simply do not.

Another aspect of Zoomers’ dumbphone usage is a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era, one that many Gen Zers were too young to experience for themselves. As far as trends go these days, you’d be hard-pressed to find one more pervasive than nostalgia.

The dumbphone revival is part of a broader reinvention of retro devices, as Gen Z is also flocking to vinyl records and cassette tapes instead of Spotify and playing outdated 8-bit games rather than firing up a cutting-edge title on modern consoles. Hollywood has followed suit, with countless intellectual properties from yesteryear being rebooted for fresh young audiences. The nostalgia economy is very real – and dumbphones fit squarely within it.

Nokia’s iconic 3310, relaunched by HMD in 2017, is a prime example of this phenomenon. According to The Guardian, its sales had doubled by 2023 compared to its relaunch figures – a remarkable feat for a device with no apps, no social media, and a screen barely bigger than a postage stamp.

Privacy and Availability

Many people – regardless of how old they are – simply don’t like to be available all day, every day. We’ve reached an era where if we don’t respond to every call, text, or WhatsApp message immediately, people wonder if there’s something wrong with us. Some people simply prefer not to be “on call” to their friends, family, and colleagues 24/7/365, instead preferring to carve out a little bit of privacy in an increasingly connected society.

Speaking of privacy, smartphones have plenty of concerns in this area. Whereas dumbphones have very few apps that hoard customer data – which is far too easily leaked – modern smartphones are essentially high-tech surveillance devices. A study from Malwarebytes found that Zoomers are more concerned than other generations with the risk of private texts and photos being leaked, so it makes sense that they might turn to simpler technology as a solution.

It can feel like some of our apps know more about us than we know about ourselves. They track our every move, know who all of our friends are, learn our spending habits, and much more. With a dumbphone, most of these concerns are essentially out the window, as they barely collect any data at all – let alone share it with third parties.

Kids, Parents, and Schools

Most parents like to be able to get in touch with their kids at any time, so having some sort of mobile phone is necessary. On the other hand, many parents also prefer to limit kids’ access to distracting and anxiety-inducing smartphone features. This can be a tough balance with a smartphone, but much easier with a dumbphone.

Mobile games can be major distractions that eat up countless hours of a child’s day, and scrolling social media feeds can lead to self-esteem issues as kids compare themselves – usually unfavorably – to influencers and peers. Dumbphones mostly eliminate these concerns while still keeping lines of communication open between parents and kids.

Parents aren’t the only ones looking to limit youths’ screen time. School-level smartphone bans have accelerated significantly in recent years, with a growing number of U.S. states passing legislation requiring districts to restrict or outright prohibit smartphone use during the school day. For students in these schools, dumbphones offer a practical workaround – allowing them to stay reachable by parents without the temptation of social media and games during class hours.

T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand – An 18-month lease agreement that allows customers to swap devices when new models are released, ideal for those who always want to stay current.

Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program – Already remarkably popular, with a RBC Capital Markets study finding that 36% of U.S. customers were already enrolled, and another 25% planning to join.

Verizon Equipment Installment Plan – A straightforward lease-to-own structure where nearly all devices are paid off over a 24-month period.

Telstra (Australia) – Lease plans cost approximately AUD$10 (~$7.38 USD) less per month compared to standard 24-month contracts, with upgrade options available after 12 months for AUD$99.

When choosing between a lease-to-own versus a rental phone plan, consider how often you like to upgrade your device. If you love having the latest model every year or two, a rental or upgrade program may suit you best. If you’d rather work toward owning your device outright, a lease-to-own or installment plan is likely the smarter financial choice in the long run.

Either way, the days of being locked into one rigid plan are long gone – today’s market offers more flexibility than ever to match your lifestyle and budget.

Key Takeaways

The mobile phone rental and lease-to-own market is growing fast – valued at $2.48 billion in 2024 and projected to reach $5 billion by 2035 – making now a great time to explore your options.

Compare programs carefully: Gazelle Flex offers upgrades in as few as 6 months, T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand runs on an 18-month lease, and Verizon’s installment plans typically span 24 months.

Assess your budget and credit score before committing, and pay close attention to upgrade timelines, cancellation policies, and total cost of ownership across different plans.

Exploring Lease-to-Own and Rental Phone Plans

Lease-to-own phone plans help those who would like to own their phone at the end of their payment period with lower monthly payments. Instead of paying a large sum upfront, customers can enter into a lease agreement, make manageable monthly payments, and eventually own their smartphone outright.

These plans come with several perks, such as the ability to upgrade your device more often and a flexible lease-purchase agreement provided by the carrier. Some popular lease-to-own programs include T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand, which operates on an 18-month lease agreement, and Verizon’s equipment installment plan, which typically spans 24 months for nearly all devices. However, before committing, you should understand the credit requirements, payment options, and possible fees involved.

Rental phone plans are similar to lease-to-own phone plans, however they typically have a shorter contract or rental term to allow for more frequent upgrades. Gazelle Flex is a phone rental program that allows for 12-month rental agreements on popular iPhone models, complete with a certified refurbished device and a 30-day money-back guarantee. It’s worth noting that the global mobile phone rental market was valued at $2.48 billion in 2024 and is projected to nearly double to $5 billion by 2035, reflecting the growing demand for flexible phone access options.

How Lease-to-Own Phone Plans Work

Flexibility and convenience are the cornerstones of lease-to-own phone plans. Typically, you enter into a contract for a set period, during which you make regular payments to cover the leasing costs of the smartphone. For example, T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand runs on an 18-month lease, while Verizon’s installment plans generally span 24 months. With some plans, you even have the option to upgrade to a new device before the lease term ends.

At the end of the lease term, you have a few options:

Buy the phone by paying a buyout fee

Upgrade to a new device

Pay off the remaining balance in a few payments

Return the device

This way, you can keep pace with the latest smartphones without straining your finances. It’s also worth noting that lease-to-own programs have gained significant traction — a RBC Capital Markets study found that 36% of U.S. customers were already enrolled in Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program, with another 25% planning to join.

How Rental Phone Plans Work

Rental phone programs, such as Gazelle Flex, also provide flexibility with your smartphone through low monthly payments to rent a device. With Gazelle Flex, you can rent a phone on a 12-month rental agreement, with the option to upgrade to your next device in as few as 6 months for first-time renters. After the initial 12-month term, the agreement conveniently rolls over to month-to-month, giving you even more flexibility.

At the end of your rental agreement, you simply send the device back to Gazelle and either purchase a device from our store or continue to rent with a new rental agreement through Gazelle Flex.

Comparing Popular Lease-to-Own and Rental Programs

Not all lease-to-own and rental programs are the same. Comparing popular options like T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand, Gazelle Flex, and Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program can help you find the best fit for your needs.

**Gazelle Flex** offers the ability to upgrade your device in as few as 6 months for first-time renters, making it one of the more flexible options available. All rental plans operate on a 12-month agreement that rolls over to month-to-month once the initial term ends, giving you added flexibility without being locked in long-term.

**T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand** is an 18-month lease agreement, meaning you’re committed for a longer period before you can upgrade or exit the plan without penalty.

**Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program** has also gained significant traction. A RBC Capital Markets study found that 36% of U.S. customers were already members of the program, with another 25% planning to join – highlighting how mainstream device leasing has become.

**Verizon’s** equipment installment plan takes a different approach, spreading payments over 24 months for nearly all devices rather than operating as a traditional lease.

The key differences between these programs come down to upgrade frequency, lease duration, and pricing structure. The global mobile phone rental market was valued at $2.48 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow to $5 billion by 2035, reflecting the growing consumer appetite for flexible device ownership alternatives. As competition in this space increases, consumers can expect even more competitive terms and upgrade options going forward.

Samsung Leasing Program

Samsung Leasing, in partnership with Progressive Leasing, offers a lease-to-own option that doesn’t require a credit check. With this program, you can make weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly automatic payments for your smartphone purchase, regardless of your credit history.

The approval process for Samsung Leasing is based on various data points, such as banking history, employment status, and income level. If you’re approved, you can enjoy 12 months to ownership.

T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand

T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand is an option for customers who like to keep up with the latest smartphone releases and don’t mind a longer lease agreement. This 18-month lease agreement allows you to:

Upgrade your leased device every 30 days

Choose from a range of devices like iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones, and other Android devices

The upfront cost, or retailer’s cash price, is relatively low for most base models with approved credit, but if you want a device with increased memory or premium features, you may need to pay a little extra.

Gazelle Flex Phone Rental Program

The Gazelle Flex rental program is a different option than the lease-to-own phone plans. This program allows a customer to rent a Gazelle certified preowned device for a low monthly payment. First-time renters may be eligible for an upgrade in as few as 6 months, while all rental plans include a 12-month rental agreement that rolls over to month-to-month once the initial term is complete.

Here’s why Gazelle Flex may be the best choice for many shoppers:

Initial 12-month rental agreement that rolls over to a month-to-month agreement

Certified unlocked iPhone models that pass a 30-point inspection

Possibility for an upgrade after the first 6 months

Small $49.99 initiation fee for the rental agreement

It’s worth noting that the phone rental market as a whole has been growing rapidly. The global mobile phone rental market was valued at $2.48 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $5 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 6.6%. This growth reflects a broader shift in consumer preferences toward flexible, lower-commitment ways to access the latest devices without the burden of full ownership costs.

Tips for Choosing the Right Lease-to-Own Phone Plan

Choosing the right lease-to-own or rental phone plan comes down to evaluating your budget and personal preferences. By comparing the features and devices offered by different programs, you can find the perfect plan for your needs and stay connected with the latest smartphones. With the global mobile phone rental market valued at $2,480 million in 2024 and projected to reach $5 billion by 2035, there are more options than ever to consider.

Assess Your Budget

Assessing your budget is fundamental to determining the lease-to-own phone plan that’s right for you. Review your monthly income, expenses, and discretionary spending to see if a lease-to-own or rental phone plan is a viable option for your financial needs. Keep in mind that lease terms vary significantly by provider – for example, T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand runs on an 18-month lease agreement, while Verizon’s equipment installment plan spans 24 months for nearly all devices. Meanwhile, some providers like Telstra offer lease plans at roughly $7 less per month than a standard 24-month contract, which can make a meaningful difference over time.

Compare Features and Devices

After gaining a clear insight into your financial and credit situation, proceed to compare the features and devices different lease-to-own programs offer. Pay close attention to the following factors to find the plan that best meets your preferences and requirements for a smartphone:

Monthly cost

Contract terms and length

Upgrade flexibility – for instance, Gazelle Flex allows upgrades in as few as 6 months for first-time renters on a 12-month rolling agreement

Device condition

Ownership rights

It’s also worth noting that consumer demand for these programs is strong. A RBC Capital Markets study found that 36% of U.S. customers were already enrolled in Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program, with another 25% planning to join – a clear signal that lease-to-own and upgrade-style plans have become a mainstream preference for smartphone users.

Summary

In conclusion, lease-to-own and rental phone plans offer an attractive alternative to traditional cell phone purchasing methods. With low monthly payments, flexible terms, and the ability to upgrade devices more frequently, these plans can help you stay connected with the latest smartphones without breaking the bank. In fact, the global mobile phone rental market was valued at $2,480 million in 2024 and is projected to grow to $5 billion by 2035, reflecting just how popular these flexible options are becoming.

If you’re prioritizing frequent upgrades with low monthly payments for your next plan, Gazelle Flex may be the best option. Our program isn’t only light on your wallet, but it also provides a certified refurbished iPhone model with flexible options to make the most out of your personal smartphone preferences. We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, and first-time renters can upgrade in as few as 6 months, with all rental plans on a 12-month agreement that rolls over to month-to-month — giving you the freedom to stay current with the latest in tech without being locked into a long-term commitment.

There’s no feeling quite like having the new phone that you want in your hands. That is, until you’re locked into a long carrier contract without the chance to upgrade to your next phone until that phone is paid off, often two years later. Yikes.

Faster upgrade cycle: With Gazelle Flex, you could be eligible for an upgrade after your first 6 months! You can then upgrade annually with each new start of a rental agreement.

Unlocked iPhone models: Our program rents unlocked iPhone models, meaning they can be taken to the carrier of your choice.

Recirculated devices: Each of our Gazelle Flex iPhone models undergo our 30-point Gazelle Certified inspection. By choosing to rent Certified Pre-Owned, you’re also choosing over a newly manufactured device and doing right by the planet. Go you!

After the end of the 12-month rental agreement, you can either:

Continue to pay month-to-month,

Upgrade to a new device, or

Cancel your rental.

When can I upgrade my Gazelle Flex phones?

First-time Flexers may be eligible for upgrade after their first 6 months. After this, you could be eligible for one yearly upgrade to the Gazelle Flex phone of your choice to save money and stay flexing with your iPhone rental of choice.

With Father’s Day right around the corner, what do you get for the tech-savvy dad? Perhaps it’s time to treat him to a phone upgrade, hook him up with the latest cooking gadgets, or surprise him with a new sound system that’ll rock his floorboards.

1. Give your dad the gift of sound on the go.

Portable speakers may be nothing new, but the latest models sure do pack a punch. Whether your dad is the work-from-home type who wants to listen to the latest tunes between meetings or an outdoorsy sort who’d enjoy bringing his favorite songs into nature, a high-quality portable speaker or Bluetooth sound system is just what you need.

From the crisp, clear sounds of the Sonos brand to the affordability and style of products like the JBL Link, a portable speaker is a great way to cater to the music-loving dad.

2. Treat your father to a phone upgrade he will love.

Is your dad still rocking an outdated device? Does he struggle to get through even a single day on his older phone battery? This Father’s Day might be the ideal time to upgrade. Gazelle only offers top-selling clearance and refurbished phone models that pass our rigorous inspections and checks.

Look at some of our favorite devices, from the iPhone 13 Pro Max to the iPhone 14 and the new Galaxy S23. You can explore blistering speeds and the latest features at a fraction of the price that retail stores and cell carriers charge. It’s the best way to give your father something special without breaking the bank.

3. Build healthy habits with a fitness tracker or smartwatch.

Set up a fun competition between the family, invite your dad to be friends on your favorite fitness app, or help the father in your life manage his schedule and notifications with a handy smartwatch or tracker. Apple, Samsung, and Fitbit all make compelling, user-friendly devices that are easy to set up.

You’ll probably want to pick a smartwatch matching Dad’s smartphone. Since even more fitness-oriented brands like Fitbit include features like text message replies, weather, music controls, and more, your choice will probably come down to brand preference.

4. Give him peace of mind with a doorbell camera.

Is the father in your life a security-conscious type of person? If so, he’ll probably appreciate you when you give him a handy, intuitive doorbell camera. You can set it up together in a few minutes and walk through the accompanying app. Between the ever-popular Ring brand, Google’s Nest alternative, and several third-party options, you will find a doorbell camera that meets your budget and helps your dad relax.

5. Invest in room-filling sound for the true cinephile.

If your dad likes his movies loud, why not help him upgrade his sound system to something with a bit of rumble? Brands like JBL and Klipsch specialize in surround sound systems that create positional audio, booming bass, and purer output so you can enjoy extra-immersive movie nights.

Work to find something appropriate for his space. For instance, consider a soundbar and subwoofer combo if he has a smaller movie room. If it’s a basement viewing space, go all out with surround speakers.

6. Keep his coffee warm with a smart mug.

If your husband constantly microwaves his coffee to keep it hot or your father lets his cool too much before drinking, a smart mug could be the simplest solution for Father’s Day. These handy gadgets allow you to set the temperature so each cup of joe is always perfectly hot.

Some smart mugs, like the one from Ember, have their own apps so Dad can quickly change the temperature from his phone. You can find a smart mug to meet any budget, especially if you don’t need the extra bells or whistles or simply want a warming surface.

7. Listen anywhere with wireless headphones or earbuds.

Whether your dad loves music, podcasts, audiobooks, or white noise, treat him this year with a better listening experience that’s simple and portable: wireless headphones. There are dozens of different options, so pick something that fits your budget and his style.

If Dad is an iPhone purist, send him a set of AirPods so he can always listen at the gym or while working. If he has a Bluetooth turntable, get him a nice set of headphones to connect and hear his favorite vinyl at its highest quality.

8. Snag a multitool for the handy dad.

Though some argue that multitools are more tech-adjacent, modern models come bundled with enough feature richness that they make the cut. Brands like Dremel create multi-purpose handhelds that can switch from drilling to cutting to polishing in a few quick part swaps.

Multitools are perfect for the hands-on DIY dad whose toolkit looks a little too full. Electric multitools take up far less space and are easy to keep charged. Some kits even come with engraving tools, metal-cutting attachments, and sanding components.

9. Surprise him with a Switch and the latest games.

Some dads don’t know where to start when it comes to gaming. That’s where you can help. Consoles like the Nintendo Switch are intuitive for all ages, and you can even pair their OLED model with a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for a complete gift bundle that will keep your father busy for countless hours. Plus, he can take the Switch on the go, making it the perfect companion for travel, long commutes, or downtime around the house.

If your dad would prefer something that requires a bit more technical savvy, the Steam Deck offers a similar handheld experience while freeing up access to his entire Steam library. The Deck is a Linux-based system, though, so a bit of a learning curve may be involved. However, once you get a few plugins running, your dad will be able to play his favorite PC games on the go.

10. Get the best viewing experience with an OLED TV.

While the latest models, like the LG C2, are still reasonably pricey (unless you love your parents enough to spend silly amounts of money on them), earlier model-year OLEDs have much lower prices. Sony OLED TVs regularly drop below $1,000, which could make for a reasonable family gift for Dad split several ways. Other brands and some QLED models dip much further. QLED doesn’t offer as sharp of a picture or the top refresh rates of OLED TVs, but it does provide a fair alternative to OLED prices.

11. Play Xbox or PlayStation on your phone with a Backbone.

One of the latest tech crazes is the Backbone controller, a handy attachment for iPhone and Android phones that enables users to play their consoles using remote play. Some models come bundled with a free month of Xbox Game Pass, so you can test Microsoft’s streaming service without committing.

Backbone controllers are also beneficial for mobile games that offer controller compatibility. After all, anything is better than trying to game using only touch controls. As an added bonus, the Backbone retails under $100, so it’s a reasonable buy for Father’s Day.

12. Make charging easier with a wireless pad.

Keeping track of charging cords, cables, and power bricks is a never-ending struggle. Make your dad’s life more straightforward with a wireless charging pad that’s fast-charging compatible. You can choose between different makes and models. Major phone brands tend to make their own versions, and you can also find third-party options at typically discounted prices. Choose between single-device chargers ideal for bedside tables and kitchen islands, or get a larger charging pad that’s a perfect fit for any work desk and can handle several devices simultaneously.

13. Add some color to your dad’s house with smart bulbs.

Smart bulbs are affordable, easy to set up, and a whole lot of fun. In a few minutes, you can install smart bulbs, connect them to your dad’s WiFi network, and start changing the colors from a handy phone app. These bulbs are a great way to set the mood for any occasion, and your dad can even choose between user-made or pre-programmed routines that change colors and styles automatically. Brands like Phillips, Govee, and Wyze offer different shapes, sizes, and color-changing options for their bulbs, so you have plenty to choose from.

14. Keep track of belongings with AirTags or Tiles.

Sometimes, our dads get a bit forgetful. If your father regularly misplaces his keys, phone, or wallet, consider giving him AirTags or Tile devices. It’s a snap to attach a tag to a keychain or tuck a credit-card-sized Tile into a wallet and start tracking it through an app. Each brand offers audible alerts making it easy to find something any time it goes missing.

15. Show off photos with a smart hub or digital photo frame.

The best tech gifts for dad this Father’s Day can still be sentimental. Add all your favorite memories and family photos to a digital frame or smart hub and leave room to grow and add even more. Smart hubs and digital frames are perfect for office desks, kitchen counters, entryways, and plenty of other spaces in the house.

Your dad can see his cherished photos and laugh-out-loud moments on his smart hub every day. From Amazon to Google and beyond, there are plenty of manufacturers to fit any price point.

Explore Gazelle to find high-quality tech gifts for Dad this year.

Looking for away to save money on electronics without sacrificing quality? There are several ways to save big on your next iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, iPad or even MacBook. These gently used devices are not only affordable, but they also help the environment by reducing electronic waste. In this article, we’ll dive into what makes us, Gazelle, stand out from the rest and why buying refurbished is the way to go.

What are Gazelle Refurbished Devices?

Gazelle refurbished devices are certified pre-owned cell phones and other electronics that come at big savings compared to buying new. We assure quality by subjecting each device in our inventory to a thorough refurbishment process before selling it on our website – a 30-point inspection to be exact.

These devices are not only affordable but also environmentally conscious, as they reduce the amount of electronic waste produced when people throw away old devices. Buying brand new may come with that incredible temporary seratonin boost, but you’re actually contributing to the larger problem of shorter device lifespan and increase production. Big yikes.

Certified Pre-Owned Electronics

What exactly does it mean when a device is “certified pre-owned“? Essentially, it means that the device has been thoroughly inspected, refurbished, and tested to ensure that it meets the same standards as a brand new product. We have our own Gazelle Certified Pre-Owned gurantee that gives you a peace of mind when ugrading to your next device.

So why choose a certified pre-owned device over a brand new one? For starters, you can save money while still getting a high-quality product that functions just as well as if you bought it brand-new. Additionally, buying used devices helps reduce e-waste and supports sustainable practices. At Gazelle specifically, our inventory of certified pre-owned devices comes with an extensive certification process so that you know you’re getting reliable electronics at an affordable price.

How does we certify their devices? They take several steps including cosmetic inspection (to ensure there are no defects), functionality testing (to make sure everything works like new), repair or replacement of any defective parts (so the device is fully functional) before finally repackaging the item in its original packaging along with essential accessories such as chargers and cables.

Thorough Refurbishment Process

We take great pride in our thorough refurbishment process, ensuring that every device is restored to its original condition. Our team of experienced technicians performs a detailed inspection and repair process that includes:

Thorough cleaning and sanitization

Replacement of any broken or malfunctioning parts

Rigorous testing to ensure optimal performance

All refurbished devices are also certified, meaning they have passed our strict standards for quality assurance.

In addition, all Gazelle refurbished devices come with a 30-day return policy and a 1-year warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. This ensures that customers are satisfied with their purchase and can trust the product will last for years to come.

Benefits of Buying Refurbished Devices from Gazelle

Black Friday is right around the corner, and with it, fantastic deals on all things tech. Whether you’re buying for yourself or a loved one’s gift this holiday season, it’s hard to go wrong with the steep discounts you’ll find on Black Friday. In recent years, Black Friday has begun to merge with nearby holidays like Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday. What’s more, many retailers now extend their deals throughout the month, so you can start jumping on Black Friday deals now.

Here’s our roundup of the best Black Friday deals in 2022.

The Best Black Friday Tech Deals for 2022

From huge TVs to folding phones, these stellar deals for Black Friday are an excellent way to save on the latest tech.

1. Phones

There’s no shortage of phone deals out there, including top-of-the-line flagships and budget-friendly options. But if you’re buying new, many of the biggest deals come with stipulations. You might need to trade in a specific phone, agree to a two-year contract or sign up for a costly plan. If you want to save big and avoid these limitations, consider a used device. At Gazelle, our Black Friday deals start at 10% off our already low prices, with up to 25% off on some models.

Whether you’re shopping new or used, keep an eye on these devices:

Apple® iPhone 13 and 14: Although the 14 came out a few months ago, we can still expect some steep discounts on the iPhone 14 and 13. Both are fantastic options, with minor upgrades like an always-on display and a new camera system in the 14. Our used phones start as low as $399 for the iPhone 13, off the list price of $799.

Apple® iPhone SE: The budget-friendly younger brother of the iPhone is the SE. It’ll give you the Apple experience with fewer bells and whistles and a lower price.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Series: The Samsung S22 is Samsung’s current flagship phone, and depending on the model and carrier, we’re expecting discounts of $50-$400. Used S22 phones start at just over $300. The S22 Ultra has an amazing camera and top-tier features. Keep in mind that the S23 should come out in January and might be worth waiting for if you want the newest phone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Series: The latest models of these phones include the Z Fold 4 and the Z Flip 4, two novel folding devices sure to impress. For the Z Flip 4, look out for $100-$200 off the typical $999.99 price. For the robust Z Fold 4, we’ve already seen pre-Black Friday prices drop below $1,600, compared to nearly $2,000 at full price. You can also expect savings on the Z 3 models, with the used Z Flip3 starting as low as the mid-$200s.

Google Pixel 6A: For a great budget phone with powerful Google software, look to the Pixel 6A. With a retail price of $449, early deals already have it down to $299.

2. Laptops

Plenty of laptops will also be on sale. While we expect lots of budget laptops on Cyber Monday, look for higher-priced items like MacBooks and gaming laptops on Black Friday.

Some products to watch include:

MacBook Air 2021 or 2022: The 2022 version of the MacBook Air uses Apple’s latest, fastest processor, but both are great lightweight choices. Retailers will likely offer $100-$150 off these models.

MacBook Pro 2021: Last year’s version of the MacBook Pro should get some good discounts with a couple hundred off the list price.

Asus ROG Zephyrus 14: This slim laptop has a modest 14-inch screen but solid specs and a low price. Early deals have it up to $500 off.

Like phones, you can also find Black Friday deals on used devices, like our Black Friday MacBook deals for 10% off.

3. Tablets

If you’re after a tablet, watch out for these deals:

11-inch iPad Pro 2021: The previous model of the 11-inch iPad Pro offers the lightning-fast M1 processor with a gorgeous display. Look for about $100 off the base model or $200-$300 off a used device.

iPad mini: The smallest and cheapest way to get the iPad experience is with an iPad mini, currently running for around $400 on pre-Black Friday sales or just over $300 for used devices.

Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra: For a high-powered Android tablet, the Galaxy Tab S8 should drop a few hundred dollars off the usual $1,100 price tag.

Amazon Fire tablets: Amazon’s budget-friendly tablets always see some good deals. They’re great for kids or anyone who needs a bare-bones tablet.

4. Smart Watches and Headphones

Need some new workout gear? Look out for:

Apple Watches: From the budget-friendly SE to the brand-new Series 8, Apple Watch deals will be abundant this year.

Fitbits: Fitbits are a great pick for watching your fitness, with plenty of deals dropping below $100.

Galaxy Watch5: Samsung’s latest version of the Galaxy Watch should get some modest discounts of around $30-$50 off.

As for audio, headphones are always a hot item around the holiday season. AirPods and Beats Studio Buds should be heavily discounted. Early prices have already brought the Beats down to $99 and the AirPods Pros to $169.99.

5. TVs

Black Friday is a wonderful time to look for TVs, especially if you want a giant screen. Some popular items this year include:

The LG A2 4K OLED: This LG TV can give you a gorgeous OLED display at a lower cost, with pre-Black Friday prices down to $569.99 for the 48-inch version.

Samsung Q60B or Q70A 4K QLED: These Samsung TVs are great mid-range options with lots of ports and clear, bright displays. For 55-inch models, early sales have them $50-$100 off.

Samsung Frame TVs: These unique TVs offer a low-glare, low-reflection screen to resemble a painting on your wall. Expect several hundred dollars off all sizes.

TCL 6-Series Mini-LED QLED 4K: Want the mini-LED experience without a premium price point? TCL has a fantastic, affordable solution. A 55-inch 6-Series model has early pricing down to $599.99.

2022 Cyber Monday Tech Deals

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are usually pretty similar to each other, Cyber Monday tends to offer more deals for smaller items, such as:

Budget TVs: For smaller screens or lower-powered TVs, watch the Cyber Monday sales.

Chromebooks and budget laptops: These handy items should also get deep discounts on Cyber Monday. Look out for products like the Lenovo Flex 3 Chromebook or the Dell Inspiron 15 3000.

MacBook Airs and iPad minis: These lightweight, entry-level Apple products could dip down further after the weekend. If you’re looking for an older model, you can find massive savings on the used market.

Smart watches: Look out for Apple Watches and Galaxy Watches, as well as fitness trackers from other brands.

Action cameras: GoPros and other action cameras usually see good Cyber Monday sales.

Smart home items: From speakers and home bases to connected lights and security cameras, you can expect plenty of smart home gadgets in the Cyber Monday catalogs.

Phones: Plenty of phone deals will stick around, particularly for previous-generation or non-flagship phones like the iPhone SE or the Google Pixel 6.

If you’ve stepped into a cell phone store in the last few years, you’ve probably heard the term 5G. You might have even heard all the hype surrounding the latest generation of wireless technology, offering faster speeds and higher rates of data transmission. 5G is an exciting step forward for cell service and other wireless tech, but what does it mean for the folks buying their next phone?

Since 5G is still evolving and being rolled out, it can be hard to follow what exactly you get with certain devices and which ones are the best options for those looking to make the most of 5G. Hopefully, we can clear things up in this guide to the best 5G phones in 2022.

What Is 5G?

The “G” in 5G refers to the word “generation,” as it does in 4G and 3G. It’s the newest version of wireless technology that has a whole new approach to creating networks, so data can move much faster and more responsively. It’s great for cell phone users, but it also has some big implications for connected technologies, like sensors and smart devices.

Wireless networks are made up of various cell sites across the coverage area. They are divided into sectors that transmit data over radio waves. 4G networks use massive, high-powered cell towers that send signals across long distances.

5G takes a different approach, sending signals through a large number of small, discreet cell stations. They’re attached to structures like light posts and buildings. These smaller cell stations are important because 5G works on a different radio wave spectrum — millimeter wave (mmWave) — that can only travel short distances. Weather and physical objects can also interfere with it.

Because of this change in infrastructure, the 5G rollout has been a long process, especially since there are different “tiers” of 5G. The highest band, mmWave, is the fastest but shortest option. Currently, mmWave is only available in select areas, so for many people who already have 5G, it feels similar to 4G. In fact, they may even be running 4G most of the time, depending on the area. That should change soon, as more networks expand 5G capabilities. Even if your phone doesn’t feel too different now, the fun stuff is starting to roll out, and a 5G-capable device is primed to take advantage of it.

Different carriers approach 5G in different ways, and not all phones are capable of supporting low-, mid- and high-bands. For the most part, high-band 5G is only available in major cities, but it should be more widespread in the future. Low-band 5G is pretty well-covered across the country. You can always check your carrier’s website for more information on coverage.

Keep in mind that carriers might call their high-band networks something different, so here’s what you’ll need to look for:

Verizon: Verizon offers mid- and high-band coverage under 5G Ultra Wideband (UW).

AT&T: AT&T’s high-band option is called 5G+, alongside their standard 5G coverage. Keep an eye out for the term 5GE, which refers to 5G Evolution. This is technically a 4G network that’s a bit more advanced and lays the foundation for strong 5G performance when the time’s right.

T-Mobile: T-Mobile’s low-band service is called Extended Range (XR) 5G, while their mid- and high-band option is called Ultra Capacity (UC) 5G.

You might also see the term C-band, which is typically a mid-band option. Other carriers may have different terms, so be sure to read carefully and check the coverage map before you buy.

The Benefits of 5G

We know how it works and that it’s fast, but what else do you get with 5G? This latest wireless technology offers:

High data transmission rates: The actual speed of 5G networks depend on many different factors, but theoretically, you could get data transmission speeds of 1-10 gigabytes per second (Gbps), with an average speed of about 50 megabytes per second (Mbps). For comparison, 4G speeds reach a maximum of 150Mbps, with an average of around 10Mbps.

Low latency: Latency is the amount of time it takes for a phone to send data and receive a response. If you’ve ever been playing a game and your player doesn’t move for a few seconds after you push a button, that’s latency in action. In fact, gaming is one of the best applications for 5G, as far as cell phones are concerned. 5G should offer latency of around 10 milliseconds on average and as low as 1 millisecond in some situations.

High bandwidth: With higher data capabilities, 5G also supports more devices on networks at once. Many cities and crowded areas, like arenas and concert venues, deal with congestion problems with so many people accessing the network simultaneously.

These are just the main effects of 5G on cell phone users — it also has huge implications for businesses and advanced technologies, like self-driving cars and drones that need immediate responses and high-volume connections. We could see some truly game-changing technology thanks to 5G.

Which Are the Best 5G Phones?

If you want to see what 5G is all about, you’ll need a phone that can support it. Here are our picks for the top 5G phones currently on the market.

1. iPhone SE, 12 and 13 Lineups

Apple has offered 5G support for a while now, and you can get one of the best 5G smartphone experiences with the Apple® iPhone SE, 12 or 13 lineups. All of these phones — including the mini, Pro and Pro Max varieties — can tap into 5G. The iPhone 12 and SE offer it at a more affordable price point, while the 13 gets you the latest Apple technology. The 13 also offers Smart Data mode, which automatically adjusts to save power if you don’t need those super-fast speeds.

All phones will give you the coveted Apple experience with excellent camera tech and a user-friendly interface:

iPhone SE: The latest iteration of the iPhone SE, the SE third generation, is a great phone, with 5G and Apple’s fast A15 Bionic chip, all at a retail price of under $500. The camera isn’t quite as sophisticated as the newer options, and it features a home button, unlike the screen-to-screen displays of the other iPhones. Still, the iPhone SE is an excellent way to get an Apple device and 5G without a high price point.

iPhone 12: Another option is to go to the iPhone 12. This phone came out in 2020 and offers many modern features, like a dual-camera setup and the still-very-fast A14 Bionic chip. It comes in a compact mini version, the standard model, a higher-powered Pro and a massive Pro Max. Compared to the SE, the 13 offers a high-contrast, brighter screen, improved water and dust resistance, MagSafe accessories and Night Mode photography. The Pro and Pro Max add some great photography options.

iPhone 13: The latest option, the iPhone 13, has all those features and more. This lineup gets exceptional battery life, the lightning-fast A15 chip and a high-powered camera system with Cinematic mode.

2. Samsung Galaxy S22 Lineup

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is one of the best 5G mobile devices for the Android fans out there. As Samsung’s flagship phone, it rivals the other major competitors with a fast processor, excellent camera system and a fairly long-lasting battery. You can choose from the standard Galaxy S22, the S22+ and the S22 Ultra. All three give you 5G access and top-of-the-line Samsung features.

The S22 and S22+ are virtually identical, except for the larger screen size of the S22+. They both have a stellar camera system, with wide, ultra wide and telephoto lenses and a powerful night photography mode. It also gets a high-tech screen that sports adaptive refresh rates, a slick option that adjusts your display’s “smoothness” according to what you’re doing. If you’re gaming and need a super responsive display, it’ll ramp up to 120 Hz. If you’re just scrolling through social media, it can drop down to 60 Hz to maximize battery life. You can choose from screen sizes of 6.1 or 6.6 inches and a wide range of colors.

If you want something a little higher-powered, the S22 Ultra offers a bigger battery, more storage options and a whopping 6.8-inch screen. Its camera system also gets an upgrade, with a 108-MP wide lens and an additional 10-MP telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom. Plus, the front camera ramps up to 40 MP.

3. Google Pixel 5a, 6, 6a and 6 Pro

With the Google Pixel phones, you can get a great mid-range 5G device with everything you need for a great experience. If you’re looking for the best budget 5G phones, consider this one. The Pixels offer everything you expect from a modern smartphone with plenty of premium features thrown in. The Google Tensor chip supports machine-learning processes, like speech recognition and security tools, while the camera system offers exceptional performance with dark and fast-moving subjects.

If you want a 5G Google Pixel, you have a lot of options, including:

Pixel 5a: The smallest of the bunch, the Pixel 5a, has a 6.3-inch screen, and a new one comes in at under $450 retail. The camera system is solid, with 12.2-MP and 16-MP rear cameras and a wide range of modes and features. One of the Pixel’s biggest claims to fame is its battery life. The 5a offers an all-day battery and can last over two days on the Extreme Battery Saver mode.

Pixel 6a: Another affordable option, the Pixel 6a has a compact 6.1-inch screen with ultra-high contrast and a handy high-brightness mode. It gets the longest-lasting battery yet, offering a typical charge of over 24 hours and up to 72 hours on Extreme Battery Saver mode. The camera system is similar to the 5a, with a 12.2-MP wide camera and a 12-MP ultrawide rear camera. Otherwise, it isn’t a huge departure from the Pixel 5a.

Pixel 6: The Pixel 6 is just slightly bigger at 6.4 inches and features improved water and dust resistance. The typical battery lasts longer than a day, and you can even use it to charge other wireless devices. The 6 uses Google’s own Tensor processor and beefs up the camera system with a 12-MP ultrawide lens and a 50-MP wide.

Pixel 6 Pro: With the Pixel 6 Pro, you get a large 6.7-inch screen with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. It also increases RAM to 12 GB and gives you storage options of up to 512 GB. The camera system sports the same lenses as the 6 and an additional 48-MP telephoto camera.

4. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3

If you’re looking for something a little more novel, the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3 are two unique options. Both use Samsung’s folding-screen technology that let the phones collapse in half. The Fold3 opens up like a book, while the Flip3 opens vertically like an old flip phone. You’re not going to get camera systems or battery life that rival the S22, but they’ll cover the basics. These are certainly not the cheapest 5G phones you could get, with the Fold3 starting at well over $1,000.

The Z Fold3’s screen opens up to a whopping 7.6 inches with a built-in ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. It comes with Samsung’s S Pen, but the camera system isn’t very competitive, offering just one 12-MP rear camera and a 10-MP front camera.

The Z Flip3 expands to a 6.7-inch screen, with similar specs to the Fold3. It offers slightly higher RAM and doubles your maximum storage options, but it won’t work with the S Pen.

5. Samsung Galaxy A53 5G

One of the cheapest 5G smartphones is the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G. It offers 5G mmWave performance and a great user experience. It won’t be quite as robust as flagship phones, but it has some surprisingly impressive specs for a sub-$500 phone.

The A53 5G has an optical fingerprint sensor, a large battery, expandable storage up to 1 TB and a 120 Hz refresh rate, along with other common Samsung features like fast charging and various camera modes. The camera is pretty hefty, with four rear cameras — including ultrawide, main, depth and macro cameras — and a 32-MP selfie camera.

Smartphones have transformed the way we find information, communicate, and work – but that convenience comes at a steep price. As of 2024, 98% of Americans (331 million) own a mobile phone and more than 91% own a smartphone, according to ConsumerAffairs. Yet with the average single-line cell phone bill hitting $141/month (nearly $1,700/year) according to JD Power – and closer to $200/month for those on multi-line family plans – the true cost of staying connected piles up fast.

New flagship smartphones routinely launch at $1,000 or more, which makes the total cost of ownership even harder to justify. Whether you’re buying for yourself or your child (SellCell surveys show 25% of parents spend around $250 on a phone for their kid, while 4% spend over $850), finding ways to cut costs without sacrificing quality has never mattered more.

The good news? There are strategies to get a great phone without breaking the bank – from buying unlocked devices and pairing them with affordable plans, to timing your purchase around sales or going the refurbished route. Pairing an unlocked phone with a low-cost carrier plan, for example, can generate significant savings compared to financing through a big carrier over a 24- or 36-month contract.

If you’re looking for ways to find a cheap phone, see our tips below for how to get a quality device at the best possible price.

How to Find Cheap Phones

Phone prices continue to rise as technology advances, and with the average single-line cell phone bill hitting $141 per month – nearly $1,700 per year – according to JD Power, finding a deal has never been more important. When you factor in multi-line family plans, NumberBarn estimates the average monthly bill climbs closer to $200. With 98% of Americans now owning a mobile phone, finding ways to cut costs while still getting a quality device is something nearly everyone can benefit from. Here are 10 tips for finding the best cheap phones.

1. Shop Online

The convenience of shopping online lets you search for great deals from the comfort of your home on your own time. With more ways to buy phones, buyers are no longer limited to the selections offered by local providers. Many retailers run their own promotions or sales, giving you the chance to find the phone you want at an affordable price. Make sure that you check out stores’ clearance sections, as you could be able to get a phone for cheap.

Check with your provider’s website when shopping online for a phone. Many carriers and manufacturers give you online-only discounts. For example, your carrier may give you discounted or waived activation fees when buying through their website. Fees like this add up faster when buying a new phone, so anywhere you can save money is helpful.

2. Get Last Year’s Model

New phones are released every year or close to it. When new models are released, they’re usually more expensive than previous models because they give you newer and better features and updates. However, this doesn’t mean last year’s model isn’t worth buying. When the new phones are released, the prices of older models drop because they’re no longer the newest and hottest product. Luckily for anyone trying to buy a cheap phone, this is a helpful way to get a great phone at a lower price.

Apple is a great example of how to get iPhones cheaper than the original price. Apple pushes software updates to older devices, which means most iPhone users can take advantage of new features without owning the latest model. Depending on the manufacturer and the model, there may only be a few differences between this year’s new phone and last year’s model — check out a side-by-side comparison like the iPhone 12 Pro vs. 13 Pro to see what you’d actually be giving up, giving you great value for your money.

3. Shop Around the Holidays

Holidays are a great time to get a new phone for cheap. Black Friday and Christmas shopping are popular times to find deals on name-brand cell phones. While this time of year you’re likely shopping for others, consider taking advantage of a phone deal for yourself.

Many manufacturers, providers and retailers give you sales and promotions around most other holidays too. For example, you’ll probably find phone deals around holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Like Amazon’s Prime Day, some businesses create their own “holidays” full of hard-to-resist sales. Another way to find cheap iPhones is through Apple’s back-to-school sale, which usually runs in late summer and can include gift cards or discounts for students and educators.

Being aware of these types of sales gives you more opportunities to find a phone on a budget.

4. Do Your Research

One of the best ways to find the most affordable prices on cell phones is to do your research. Phone prices can vary from seller to seller, so looking around helps you gauge average prices and the best places to shop for a phone.

When researching phone prices, one thing to look at is phone features that can affect price, like storage space and battery life. For example, phones with more storage space likely cost more.

Additionally, researching gives you a chance to compare different models and businesses to choose what you need. If you just need the phone to make calls and texts, paying a premium for extra storage or a high-end camera is something you can probably do without.

5. Trade-In Your Current Phone

When looking for ways to get a cheap new phone, one option worth considering is upgrading or trading in your current phone. Many carriers give you money for your old phone to put towards a new one. Some carriers have promotions where you’re paid more for a trade-in. These promotions are usually easiest to take advantage of if you’re trading your phone in at the same store you’re looking to get a new one.

However, there are other ways to trade in your phone for money. Companies like Gazelle let you sell your old phones and devices. Gazelle inspects your device to determine how much they’ll pay you for it, depending on the device’s condition, which means you can still get paid for those old, cracked phones stuffed in the back of your closet.

6. Look for Unlocked Phones

While unlocked phones might not seem like they’re saving you any money upfront, they can in the long run. Unlocked phones let you avoid being locked into a contract or carrier, which happens when you buy your phone directly through a carrier, meaning you have the freedom to change your phone plan, switch carriers or find new phones whenever you want.

The freedom of an unlocked phone can be extremely budget-friendly. Pairing an unlocked device with a low-cost carrier plan can save you a significant amount compared to financing a phone through a carrier over a 24- or 36-month contract. Unlocked phones can also be sold or upgraded, giving you more flexibility.

7. Consider Carrier Promotions

It’s common for carriers to offer promotions to draw new customers. For example, new customers may be able to get a free or heavily discounted phone when they sign up for an unlimited plan. Make sure that you check out promotions like this, especially if you’re unhappy with your current carrier.

These promotions are usually enticing and may seem too good to be true, which they sometimes are. If you’re thinking about getting a phone for cheap through a carrier promotion, be sure to look into the terms of the promotion to make sure it’s actually something you want. There may be hidden fees, trade-in requirements or multi-year contract stipulations that make the deal less desirable than it first seems.

8. Get a New Phone on a Contract

While top-of-the-line phones are most desirable, they also cost the most – well over $1,000 for flagship models. Like many others, you might find this an unrealistic amount of money to spend upfront on a new phone. If you foresee yourself being with the same carrier for an extended time, consider getting that top-of-the-line new phone on an installment plan or contract. While terms can vary between carriers, most let you make smaller monthly payments on a phone spread over 24 or 36 months.

By the end of the contract, you’ll have paid off your phone and can either continue your plan or sell the phone and start a new one. While you’ll have to be careful when entering carrier contracts, this is a helpful way to make a premium phone more accessible without a large upfront cost.

9. Switch to a Cheaper Phone Plan

Part of what makes owning a phone so expensive is the cost of the plan itself. With average monthly bills ranging from $141 to $200 depending on your plan type, there’s room to save. Unlimited data plans are the most expensive, and for some users, they’re basically unnecessary.

Depending on how you use your phone, you might not need an unlimited plan. For many, unlimited data is more than they’ll ever use, and they’re paying for the excess. Opting for a smaller, more targeted plan – or switching to a budget-friendly mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that runs on the same networks – gives you real monthly savings without sacrificing coverage quality.

10. Buy Refurbished Phones

One of the best ways to get a cheap phone is to buy one refurbished. Refurbished phones are usually used phones that have been cleaned up and repaired to work like new. Despite looking and operating like new, refurbished phones are cheaper. Refurbished phones may have updated or replaced parts like a new screen or battery. Depending on where you buy from, you could be able to get a warranty on the phone.

When purchasing refurbished phones, it’s important to buy from reputable sellers like Gazelle, which guarantees that the phone is refurbished and inspected, so you’re sure to get a quality phone that comes as described. You’ll find a number of refurbished devices – like iPhones and Samsungs – that are unlocked or compatible with various carriers. This is especially worth considering for parents, as SellCell data shows that 25% of parents spend around $250 on a phone for their child, which makes a quality refurbished device a middle ground between cost and reliability.

Other Considerations When Buying a Used Phone

Buying a used phone can be extremely affordable, though it’s important to know what you’re getting. There’s a bit of a difference between a used phone and a refurbished phone, and it usually has to do with the condition of the phone. While refurbished phones are repaired, used phones usually show signs of wear and tear. Here are a few important things to consider before buying a used phone.

Pay Attention to the Phone’s Condition

When buying any used phone, it’s important to remember the condition. Used phones for sale should include a description of the phone- like its physical condition, operating condition and any other facts disclosing wear and tear on the phone- it’s common for used devices to have scratches or dents. Even if you’re OK with that, you want to be aware of these things before buying.

Unfortunately, some places try to sell used phones without disclosing the phone’s condition- it will be frustrating if you pay for a phone, thinking it’s in better shape. Another thing that matters is learning about who you’re buying the phone from. Make sure that you buy from honest sources. Know what to look for and how to choose if something is worth your money.

Check for a Return Policy

If you’re buying a used or refurbished phone from any type of reseller, be sure to check for a return policy. If you get your phone and it unknowingly has scratches on it, you might consider returning it.

While you can usually detect scratches and physical damage immediately, problems with the software or internal parts of the phone may take more time to see.

Take note of the return window in case problems like this come up, so you have a chance to make the return if you need it. The last thing you want is to be stuck with a broken phone and unable to get your money back.

Gazelle offers shoppers a 30-day return policy – an optimal amount of time to decide if the phone is a fit for you or to detect any unknown problems and make the return.

Consider the Total Cost of Ownership

With the average single-line cell phone bill sitting at around $141 per month according to JD Power – or nearly $1,700 per year – the cost of your device is one part of the challenge. Pairing an unlocked used phone with a budget-friendly carrier plan can save you money compared to financing a brand-new phone through a carrier over a 24- or 36-month period.

This is especially worth thinking about for parents. According to SellCell surveys, about 25% of parents spend around $250 on a mobile phone for their child. But 4% have admitted to spending over $850. A quality used phone can be a great combination – functional and affordable – without being too expensive.
Does Anything Come With the Phone?

We’ve mentioned a few times that it’s important to know what you’re getting when buying any phone. Another feature of that includes phone accessories.

Find out if anything comes with your phone. Depending on who you buy a used or refurbished phone from, things like chargers, cases, stylus pens and screen protectors could be included in the price. In other cases, you might have to pay separately for these items. Most sellers include a compatible charger for the phone, at the very least, though it’s worth checking to be sure. Keep in mind that some newer phone models have moved away from including chargers, so this is an increasingly important thing to confirm before purchasing.
